Just after a long drive tonight to rowland i start hearing this loud clanging noise from my engine... and im thinking its my timing chain... But i wanna make sure its the timing chain thats going and not something else (i.e.: tension guides...) I still have that little hope that its not the chain...

Any suggestions to what it is and what will happen if i keep on driving like that... (yea not a good idea but just wanna know the consequences...) thx

I've not had any 1st hand experience (thank god), but this is what i've heard.

The timing chain has no failsafe guides. If/when it breaks lose, it WILL slap anything in it's path VERY hard. From what others have posted, it seems that depending on it's velocity when it's released (RPMs), it has a very strong potential of totally destroying your engine.

You should have your car checked out asap!

Took my car in the shop today and the guy said the loud noise was the crankshaft bearing and not the timing chain or the tension guide... He said it would cost more to fix it then to get a new engine... THIS REALLY *#$%^ sucks... What should i freaking do now... dont got money for a swap yet either...
And how would that bearing make that loud ass noise anyways... Man life without a car is gonna really suck...

umm.. that doesn't sound right. A crankshaft bearing isn't that hard to replace.. pull the oil pan, unhook rods, pull the crank, replace bearing, re-assemble.. I think he is charging you too much..

I could be wrong though. Just seems like it wouldn't be as hard as they make it sound. I think they are trying to fuck you. If I'm wrong.. sounds like it's time to get an SR

you're forgetting the part about dropping the tranny and unbolting the crank from the flywheel so you can get it out. yes, all of this will cost more than a $800 KA24DE...which is what you should buy for the moment. get a decent one, have the mechanic drop it in, and be on your merry way.
