s14 question about O2 sensor

I had to give my VIN number to the dealer to get the part number to get O2 sensors for my car. Is there different O2 sensors for s14's? What would happen if I get a O2 sensor from somone else but its still plugs in? I have a 96 240sx and its a California car if that matters.

Arian..Yep there are different O2 sensors for the S14. Early production model S14's, (March/April 94's), had a one wire 02 sensor. Later model 95's & some 96's switched over to a three wire 02 sensor. Don't quote me on this, but I think 97-98 model years either used the same three wire O2 sensor or switched over to a four wire sensor...can't remember...not sure though. Haven't seen an 97-98 O2 sensor in over a year & a half.
Anyhow, click on the attached link to learn about the difference between the one wire & three wire O2 sensor:

PS:
Almost forgot, if it plugs in & works then you are okay. You can test your O2 sensor by putting your ECU into Diagnostic Mode....you'll need a Factory Service Manual, (FSM) for that. Use the SEARCH function here on Zilvia.Net to find & download a free FSM for your S14.

96-98 is the same front sensor, it's the rear that switched over to 4wire in 97.
