has anyone ever removed there cats? how much hp are 240's looking to gain with the removal of the cat/cats?
the reason im asking is im more or less going for cheap hp (if i get this car on fri) untill sr20 which will be im like a year. has anyone done this, does anyone recomend this... opinions opinions and yes i know it will be hella loud b/c they are of in my fc3s and w00t i set car alarms off!! (dual n1) |

Don't do it. People rarely see gains of more than one or two hp, and if you only punch out the core you may actually lose hp due to flow restrictions from turbulance. The cost to the enviroment for your 1 hp hardly seem worth it. If you must do it, invest in a test pipe which will maintain the smooth flow and diameter of the pipe, but I will urge you not to do it. It's not like you're running a highly tuned race car where any fraction gain may help you win. A tune up will probably yeild more power.

There are Cat Replacements things called testpipes, they simply bolt on exactly how your cat was held on.. i recomend it, saves yah gas and instead of just having a hollowed out cat you just got streigh pipage! check out www.testpipe.com if they dont have it their look around... other peeps make em too...

I've heard of some decent #'s by removing cats, but this was on a 97 supra twin turbo. I dont think you can expect anything great out of stock 240. Test pipe is a good idea imo though...

i'd also like to back up the people saying that your gains will be minimal. and i'd like to reinforce the amount of harm you'll be doing to the environment. if you have enough money for a PDM dump/test pipe, you have enough money for a hi-flo cat. Get that and get the best of both worlds. Low emissions and good flow for high power.

yeah when you see car that get like 20-30 hp from it, they are all turbo cars, b/c that does wonders for the turbo, letting it spool quicker and whatnot.
hey 240arordsX, thanks for the website, i didnt even know that one existed. im looking at it right now....holy crap this site rocks....they have one for jsut about every car, the one for 240 says its for 89-95..so i duno? but im looking at the custom page. thanks a lot for that page, it looks like i can have one for less than 40 bucks! |

outta curiosity...
1- why is it called a dumb pipe? thats an abbreviation for something right? 2- won't a dump pipe do as much damage to the environment as no cat would? if not.. the why not?

dump pipe/test pipe/straight pipe...same thing. it's just a steel tube with flanges on each end that replaces the cat. it "dumps" the exhaust gases right into the rest of the piping instead of having them flow through a series of catalyzing agents.

Eric</td></tr></table><span id='postcolor'> what he said. And I'll add that beyond cost ($$ and environmentally) of that one lonely hp, its also bad b/c more emissions means tighter emissions laws. The more reason they have to regulate, the more they will. I get an odd kick when people who don't live in emissions control states think its cool to pollute. wrong! That's the surest way to spawn the next C-alifornia A-ir R-esources B-oard in their state and rush OBDIII into action! |

Mark- I read somewhere that OBD III is going to have a thing that when you speed excesivly anywhere (track/street etc) that the information will be sent to the local authorities and tickets will be issued. Have you heard anything about this? damn these laws making us have to pay even more for new cars just for a damn diagnostics thing.

Just to add to what some of these guys said unless you have a turbo then you will see little to no gain or some loss depending on the age of your engine. I have a turbo and I have a full straight front pipe and yes there was mad gains like mentioned. I am in Japan there emission testing here does not envolve any U.S. related emission testing Org. That is why it is so hard to get some of these cars into the states. emission testing NO matter what state you are from it is mandatory. It is not worth it to your engine to go catless either.

personal privacy groups will have none of it. and even if it does happen, there are plenty of computer people on here that will find a way around it. the more they try and hold us down, the harder we come back up. translation; for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. |

I remember reading something about that w/ OBDIII a few years ago. I think that was a myth based on then developing technology. That stuff is possible now, but I've heard nothing about its addition.
Agreed it would never work. hell - it took the Supreme Court to allow no fault red light and speeding cameras. There's no way there going any further. I would be among the first to sabatoge the box if there was one in my car. |
