for the advice guys but i don't think it has anything to do with the speakers themselves...since the "active speaker" system has external factory amps powering each set (the front and rears), i think it has something to do with that...
but i'm not going to disagree that the factory speakers (which are so called "clarion") are crap....

Why does everyone like to by pass the amps when installing new speakers? Wouldn't it be good to power the new speakers by the factory amps? Are they just one channel amps? How much power do they put to each speaker?
I am confused about these.

the "active speaker" factory amp are not as powerful as most decks these days...eg the pioneer with mosfet....over a 200watt deck...i'm postive the nissan amps aren't anywhere close..if i was to guess i'd say 20w per channel max!

if anyone knows where the amps are located that would be wicked, cuz like i said, i'm having some probs with the rears!!
i saw one in the passenger door, but i don't know if thats front or back.

thanx

Red (+) and Grey (-): Front channel Input
Blue (+): Rear channel input
Green (+): Rear channel output

I removed all my factory amps and ran all new wiring also. Theres 3 amps. One in each door right behind the speakers, and one on the drivers side back up under that rear speaker. You have to take all the interior peices off to get at it. The factory amps BTW put out 5W each and the rear puts out 10W, 5W to each rear speaker. Most headunits these days put out between 17-27Watts per channel. Keep in mind that when a cd player says 45x4 for example that they are talking about MAX power so its really putting out about 22W RMS. When they talk about standalone amps RMS is talked about. Dont pay any attention to MAX power numbers, all that matters is RMS.

heres what im gonna do ( like anyone cares &nbsp;<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''> &nbsp, since i have recently gutted out the rear half of my car i notice that the speakers are held in place on a piece of metal that is independent (bolted in) from the actually chassis. &nbsp;since the rear speakers are pointed in a crappy direction and will only bounce around in all that now uncovered metal, i am gonna remove the speakers and the thing that holds em in place, and im gonna mount 6x9's with boxes facing towards the front. &nbsp;besides 6x9's rule and 4x6's just plain suck balls. &nbsp;even though im gutting out my car (well just the rear im leaving front half together) inorder so save weight, i have to have some sort of halfway decent sound, though i will never get subs or amps, just a nice headunit and replacement speakers for stock.

p.s. s13 hatch

Mike, No I'm not running factory speakers, infact I dont even use the mounting locations. I made a custom deck for the rear out of plywood with 1x1 support bars underneath, painted it all black then covered it in black carpet and mounted the speakers in that. That way you can use any size speaker you wish, i used 6.5" but wish i had done 6x9".

For the front i tore out the mounts there also and made custom mounts out of sheet metal and bolted it to the door frame. Then i used XTC speaker baffles to keep the water off the back of the speakers. I mounted crossovers under the door panel that feeds the tweeters i mounted up high. I'll post some links to my webpage that has some finished pics from about 6mos ago.

Some pics of my car and my speaker install.

Hope this helps!
Jon
