sand it. then hit it with some color matched spray can, I know many engine bays that have just sanded and hit with applance paint, in a can and it looks great, and seems to hold up to tool scratches etc.
unless you have big bucks most places wont do full shells..

Just clean it, get rid of the rust, scuff it up, tape it off, and paint it a dark color. Probably take a day but you'll save a lot of money. I know most places don't like doing it because it is too time consuming. Expect to pay a price for it to get done professionally

Is it possible to purchase just the base color?
I dont think they sell it in spray cans. My color is Aztec red. Otherwise I am going to have to invest in a spray gun and grinding tools if I end up doing it my self. Seeing as how its not a huge area to spray, I am guessing the prep work is the real PITB and can drive up costs? Anyone else had it done or could throw out some figures/estimations also? |

most bays are black no matter what...
It keeps the grime from showing etc. i would just tape it off sand some parts and spray it flat black or something. done. a track car had its bay done and the price jumped super high, the whole job cost something like 2,300 for it.. inside and out...

I agree Paint it a dark color, take as much out your as you can egr coolant tank and ps are all in the way of a nice job..go buy engine paint and reducer, tape off your towers and brake and cluthc lines and go at it, at the end use the reducer to clean any spots where over spray is ...prep is as easy as pie , no need to rough it up use your favorite grime cutter Like purpel lightning and a powewasher, let dry then go over it with a rag and some mineral spirits reducer till it is nice and clean, then paint away ...i just painted the bay of my nissan saturday i took only 2 hrs

i removed EVERYTHING from my engine bay and cleaned it thoroughly. i sprayed my frame rails glossy black. then i prepped the bay by wet sanding it with higher grit sand paper...like 400, then 600, then like 800 or so. then i sprayed it with a single stage paint from a spray gun. the color i did was "carribean blue" from the infiniti G35. i did it all in my garage. its not hard and it turned out great. the most time consuming part is masking everything off and cleaning all of the grease and grime. i may re do it next summer with a two stage base and clear to make it look even better.

I did mine, AJ4 Ultra Red, in spray cans, just wiped it all down with acetone and went crazy. It looks 10x as good as the OE paint and it all matches. What's best is you can retouch any area you want later without worrying about color match.

i would jsut use semi gloss black as it shows the imperfections less. and no matter what colour your car is painted itll still look good.
think about this, you paint your car and engine bay blue, then a year down the road get it painted yellow. you need to yank the engine out to re-paint the engine bay cause blue engine bay doesnt look good with yellow paint. i know it was just an example but you get the point. |

I think you guys convinced me to do it myself.
The black engine bay looks damn good. But I am trying to stick with a OEM feel overall with mine by keeping the bay close to the same color. How about air guns you would recommed? And where did you purchase your colors? I think dupicolor has a close match to the OEM aztec red? |

In the past I have just gone down to the local paint supply store and they mix up a colour match spray can right infront of me, it is like $10 or so a can and all you have to do is give them the paint code.
I got it priced out a while ago to get the interior floor and trunk as well as the engine bay painted and they said it would be about $800 and that was not including the exterior paint....So for about $100 worth of supplies and paint I would rather do it myself. I was thinking about using a angle grinder with a wire wheel on it and strip the interior floor, trunk, and engine bay because there is some surface rust. Then primer and paint it, have any of you guys done this aswell or would you reccomend anything???

YUM! SimpleGreen! If you do it yourself it ends up turning out pretty decent. I can vouch for JSpecBnr32's engine bay, looks good, simple and easy.

theres that high temp BBQ grill paint - i seen a lot of engine bays done with that - with a brush and with a can - both look better after time than my engine bay.
my paint scratched up a lot from the engine going in and out - and tools, and different turbos goin on. im gonna do the bbq paint next time the motor is out |
