Noisy transmission on deceleration
I have searched on other sites and found many people with the same problem. Really no solutions. I dont know where else to look. My problem is that I did the 5-speed swap about a year ago without any problems. Put on a fidanza lightweight aluminum flywheel, spec 2+ clutch, driveshaft shop aluminum driveshaft, and I already had aluminum pulleys, also have a B&M shifter. It hasn't been all that bad until recently, but now its LOUD when i left off the gas to let the engine brake. push the clutch in, goes away. it can sit in neutral and I can here the same noise but much softer. i recently had the driveshaft off, but there is no alignement marks, and they dont instruct it to be "aligned" for balance. Everything seems tight, but its like a pack of wild bees is trying to jump out of the transmission.

I have the same noise coming from my shifter area. Have a B&M and stock flywheel, clutch driveshaft.
I just kinda figured it's from the shifter hole, no dampening due to the new shifter, allows for the tranny noise to travel through the shift linkage. mmmm...?

Well mine I just got from a guy for the swap. Have no idea how many miles are on it. But I do know that the guy that used it before me drove the shit out of it. So yeah it makes sense that it would be a bearing, since it gets louder with the RPMs. And especially louder when I grab ahold of the shifter. When it just sits there not so much, even in gear.
Wierd.

eheheheh... i have the same problem.... the grinding noise you hear when you don't have your foot on the clutch is the throw-out bearing or release bearing... its making noise because its telling you that its almost time to replace it... if it gets really loud to where that's all you hear then its time to replace it...
the noise you hear while your driving is the B&M short shifter... there really isn't a solution to that other than taking it off and using a stock unit... if you do not have the budget to replace it any of these... i'd say just blast the radio or just imagine that you have a sequential gearbox in your JGTC car.... ![]() |

Pretty much it's a combination of things.
B&M shifter makes noise when there's a lot of vibration in the driveline. SR's and KA's both have mad driveline vibration on deceleration. This is dampened out by a stock organic disc sprung clutch and the stock driveshaft bushing. Anything different creates vibration. If you combine this with stiff motor mounts, it becomes worse. 6 pucks are notorious for creating noise and are the major cause of the vibration. |

Yeah makes sense. Since I've got Nismo mounts and the B&M, plus I removed the clutch dampener box, I've got alot more vibration.

Definetly the main input shaft bearing. I'd replace it quick before it causes more problems.

I had the same problem as well with my original 5spd swap transmission... bad input shaft bearing. The input shaft bearing was so worn out, that I found there was about 1/4 inch input shaft endplay when I pulled the transmission out! It was also causing my clutch to chatter at friction point, because of so much endplay.

Hey Guys,
Had the same problem and i was able to rectify... Replace the transmission mount and run Redline Gear Oil - 2parts MT-90 and 1 part Heavy Duty Shockproof. I'm running nismo's and I also placed some black gasket maker in-between the transmission and the short shifter plate. Beleive it or not, I have no vibration noises all the way to 7200rpm. Might work for you guys as well. PM me if you need any additional info... Rod |
