I am a proud owner of a 1989 240SX (US Edition) that I've only had about a month and it has started to really overheat in the last couple of days.  I was wondering if this is a common problem with the stock KA?
 I checked to make sure that it has plenty of water and oil, and there are no leaks that I could find. So I'm going to put in a new thermostat this weekend and hope that solves the problem.
 Any other suggestions would be very welcome.

Check the water pump as well.  It's not a common problem, but one that needs immediate attention if it's no longer functioning.  Otherwise the cooling system should be fine for normal driving.  Plenty of memebers auto-x on stock cooling setups.

More than likely it is the thermostat. It's probably the original.... Also check and make sure your fan clutch is engaging when the engine is at normal opperating temp. (you should hear a "roar" when acellerating in neutral. When you replace your thermostat make sure you propperly bleed your cooling system. There is an air bleed screw located at the upper water neck, and it doesn't hurt to jack up the front of your car so the radiator cap is the highest point in the system. Just keep adding coolant until you don't see air bubbles.....

I put in the new thermostat and spent 20 minutes getting all of the air out of the cooling system and it hasn't overheated yet. I ran her up I-5 20 miles with the cruise set at 80 and the AC on full blast and she stayed perfectly cool.
