DO NOT hit the end of the axle. Place a wedge bar/center punch against the axle in the indent and hit it squarely with a BFH. Should loosen it enough to begin sliding. Throw a little WD40 in for good measure.

Yea, I f'd up a friends axle beating it out with a hammer, had to spend an hour re-filing the threads on the end so we could get the axle nut on. +1 to R240NA, from someone who's done it the wrong way, lol.

you CAN use a big rubber mallet or a dead blow hammer, those work pretty good. But don't use a shop hammer or mini sledge, that'll F.U.B.A.R. your threads everytime.

You can do it that way, but you run the risk of pushing the nut on forcefully with the blow of a hammer, especially a mini-sledge. Thus stripping the threads on the axle. I'd say 95% of the time it works pretty good. But there's always that one time that the rust is just too much for it to budge with one hit. The more you wack at it the greater the risk. <= ha ha ha....

It's really hit or miss. I've seen some come out with just a little nudge, and others I've had to beat so bad that once they slide out of the hub they get caught since the end is crowned so bad. A rubber mallet won't hurt it but it might not be enough to provoke it to move either.

How different is this from doing 5 lug swap? I figured it'd be about the same- except you remove the axle instead of putting on a hub.

the hub swap is easier to do and less time consuming, but the "axle" swap is not that bad assuming you have the correct tools.

Also just another method of doing this.......I use a a brass mallet and a regular mallet at the same time. You put the brass mallet up against the axle end, then hit it with the regular mallet,. It pops right out.

Or if need be go rent yourself a hub puller. They are designed with a center pin that sits directly on the indent on the end of your axle. They have clamps that wrap aroung the sides of the hub. You then just turn the nut on the threaded center pin and it slowly pulls your hub off the axle splines nice and slowly.

We've already discussed that this is the wrong way to do it. Your input isn't needed.
