How to tell if the TCT gone bad

I was curious as to how you can tell if the Timing Chain Tensioner has gone bad?
I pulled mine out, waiting on a replacement to put in. Also I did search. What I could find is that its uses oil pressure to help apply tension, so I'd assume that being clogged or something could cause it to fail.

Any other reason?

Squeeze it and see if it moves in and out. If it doesn't (like my old one) then I think it should be replaced. But if it compresses fine then it should be ok I would assume.

I pulled mine out and it was extreamly stiff but it did move in and out.
After more searching, I found that apprently it can go bad if you haven't changed your oil in awhile. Which I'm 500miles over due for my oil change.....but odd that it would affect it that bad.

I've bought a new one and will do a SeaFoam treatment and oil change when I install it. Hopefully, this will solve the rattling issue that it has had lately.
