Best clutch for sub 300whp SR?
I need a new clutch. Something quality but nothing crazy as I am still running a T25 with no plans to upgrade. I was thinking about a Stage 1 Exedy. Anyone have any input?
Thanks |

Overkill is the approach I like to subscribe to.
If you have a clutch that CAN take 300+ whp, with no plans to ever see to it that the clutch will actually SEE that amount, then you'll get more useful life out of it. My suggestion is to get the best clutch for whatever amount of money you're looking to spend. Search, clutches are oft-discussed and people DO have opinions as far as brands and such go. |

same as above exedy or either ACT. i had them for for the last 8 years and recently picked up another ACT. its worth the cash you pay for it.

i really like the clutch masters dual friction. it was great clutch. a lot of grabbing power while still maintaining close to stock pedal feel.
i'm looking at the RPS sport puck clutch kit? good for an additional 300 ft/lbs torque and only 15% more pedal feel |

If you have low power, it doesn't matter what kind of torque the clutch is rated for, all that matters is how you like your clutch to react and feel. I'd take a 6 puck or 3 puck over an organic clutch any day of the week. I'd either go with RPS max 6 puck, exedy stage 2, or if you don't mind the risk of breaking trannies under hard shifting or clutch kicking, go with a super single from any of the reputable japanese companies.

i've had an ACT that held up decently, then got a competition that i haven't been overly pleased with, and just got a hyper single from exedy that should be going in soon, and will hopefully be awesome.

I've been rolling the stock clutch that came with the swap for over 1.5 years and it will only slip if I abuse it during that session and when its pretty cold outside. I will be replacing it with an rps max 6 puck, probalby overkill for your plans.
Get the rps sport puck or the exedy stage 2. |

I'm looking to go -~300whp on my sr swap. I'm leaning towards the centerforce dual friction. but i just saw the clutchnet clutches and I like the idea of being able to make your own kit picking the pressure plate and clutch material seperate. I hear kevlar clutches are pretty much indestructable if they are properly broken in, ut up until now havent seen a company that sells a pure kevlar clutch for an SR...what are your thoughts on being able to pick the pressure plates and clutch plates independantly of each other?

RPS Max Street... Awesome pedal feel, significantly stiffer than stock (but I personally like a stiff pedal compared to a pedal that feels like mush). I'm running this clutch on my S14 SR. I have no big performance upgrades and I am currently still running 7psi... Clutch is very streetable, grabs when it needs too and I can bark em' or spin my 18's going into 2nd anytime I want. I plan on going into and above the 300rwhp realm so I decided to get this because it'll last awhile and still take abuse from clutch kicks, dumps and slips... It takes some getting use to but, well worth the money I spent on it. I use this clutch in conjunction with a Spec Billet steel flywheel. My only complaint is that it doesn't come with an alignment tool or a throw-out bearing.
BTW, my performance upgrades are as follows; Full 3" exhaust, Apexi intake, and FMIC running 7psi...

i really don't think you can go wrong with exedy. they have a solid overall reputation across almost all automotive forums that have exedy as an option. prices arn't cheap, but arn't unreasonable considering the good quality of their parts in general. I've driven a s13 once breifly that had either an exedy st.1 or st.2 (i forget exactly which) and it felt very close to oem. i really liked it.
never actually owned a car with an exedy before but i do have act street clutch on my crx and a more aggressive 6-puck on my 240. both also have a lightweight chromoly flywheels. while it may not be an entirely relevant comparo, the act on my crx works excellent! it's easy to engage, but gives a slightly more firm clutch pedal feel. very streetable and fun to use! ![]() The 6-puck act on my 240, however, has not been so enjoyable. the engagement point is pretty difficult to master, and grabs very abruptly. its just very difficult to predict and master. I always have to be super-conservative when releasing the clutch to engage. its horrible for daily driving imo, and prob will be a bit scary for track driving (difficult to drive smooth). I'm really looking to replace this clutch with an exedy hyper-single, should the funds become avail in the not so near future. I also read somewhere that the aftermarket clutch for the 300zx applications may be worth looking into. I've heard they can handle a lot more torque compared to the corresponding 240sx apps, but don't quote me on it. I haven't really done any research on that (no reason to right now), but i do think it may be worth checking out. well that's my uneducated observations anyways! |

Nismo clutch is so-so. One came with my swap and burnt out quick. Rocking an Exedy Stage 2 for close to 2 years. Great clutch, pushing 350whp now and it shows no signs of slipping.

i also have a exedy stage 2 clutch, i like it alot....and i'm pretty sure whatever brands people posted up should be good too. whatever floats your boat dude. correct me if i'm wrong but they all should be around the same price if it's going to hold around 300hp[i think ^_^].

Exedy Stage 2 or ACT 6 puck sprung, those 2 cost about the same and nobody has ever had any issue with any of them. If you go ACT, make sure its SPRUNG, or else your left calf will hate you when you get stuck in traffic.
