Changed the water pump and now

I changed the water pump and the thermo today and When i go to start it i hear a gargling sound for about 5-10 seconds after I stop trying to crank it. I pulled the plugs out to check them and there was water on the spark plug? Not sure what to do at this point. Any help guys? Thanks!

Sorry gotta get the basic shit out of the way,

Why did you change out the water pump?

Sure it's water and not fuel after 5-10 seconds of cranking? Is the engine firing (I assume not if you can crank it that long)

Did you bleed the system properly to get rid of the air? (Gurgling/bubbling noises)

Water on the plugs = blown HG... Leakdown test. Don't see how you blew the HG just by changing the water pump though, so thats why I ask why you're changing it.

Well, I got the car about a month ago. Its been sitting since then. Guy said it was overheating so he stopped driving it. I picked it up from his house and rove it 5 minutes to mine. Didnt overheat or nothing? Didnt want to take the chance of blowing it so I changed the Thermo. Filled it back up with fluids and then I noticed water coming from the water pump. Not a chance of dripping, but actually flowing out. So I just changed it out today. Put everything back together. Filled it up, BUT, I forgot to bleed the system before starting it. So I tried twice and then started hearing gargling sounds. So i stopped. Figured I wasnt getting spark so I Pulled the plugs and BOOM, water on 1 and 2. Didnt bother pulling 3 and 4.

Try leakdown testing it. Or if you fire it up without the rad cap on and the water bubbles/shoots out you know the HG is toast

Yeah the previous owner prolly blew the HD when he overheated it.If you cant get ur hands on a leak down test just do a compression test. That should be good enough to tell if u have blown HD. Goodluck

your HG is most likely gone or the head is warped. take the head off, check the HG, if its fine, replace it anyways, with soemthing stronger like SCE or Cometic. Then check your head with a feelers gauge per the FSM by doing a X pattern with the feeler gauge and testing

Ok, well its time for me to make a move.

Tomorrow is 1/2 off at the Pick And Pull. I am going to pick up a head and send it to the machinest tomorrow. Do you think I should trust the block or should I just find a decent CA18DET and drop it in? I know if its going to rack up to $400~ I am just going CA. I would really love not to come off the cash but, I need it for my daily.

This will be my first semi rebuild so any tips or suggestions for pulling my head off would be great.

Also, when I pull it off, will I have to reset timing? Thanks Again Guys!

I warped my head after my radiator cracked and got a re-manufactured head with new valves shipped for $450 bucks. The gaskets were another $80.

From your signature I'm guessing you have a SOHC so I don't know if this helps but when I did my head swap on my DOHC I didn't have to touch the timing but I did bring it back to TDC and then put everything back together. It took me roughly 2 days to do it because I had work, school, and it was my first time doing it.

As long as you do everything to specifications from the FSM it'll be a breeze, unless you have big hands, then is sucks. Anyhow, GL with whatever you do.

Well, I pulled the head off the donor car in the 'yard today. Best $20 I spent. There was minor carbon build up on the pistons but the cylinder walls and everything else looked good. So tomorrow its going to the machinest to get check and decked. I might go ahead and build the head while its there. I was planning on going SOHC-T before this mishap but I guess its good for the extended look. I will be putting a metal HG on it too. Thanks Guys!

Wait, you mean I can't pull my head off, inspect the head gasket, and then just reuse because it passed visual?

No, You will probably damage it while pulling it off. Plus its worth it just to change it while its off and have the piece of mind knowing its new.

lol, teasing man. Was giving skate a hard time for even suggesting that you could re-use it if it 'looked' okay.

Well i just finished pulling my head and this is what I found. Cylinder #3 was completely full of water. I soaked as much as I could up. What should I do about the surface rust and the carbon? It seams like its just flaking off.

Think I can clean it up alittle and get by for a couple months with a new HG and head til I can drop a CA in there?

(haha you pulled the head without the intake manifold.)

I say just get as much of the loose debris as you can out of there with a shopvac and some compressed air.

Got the new head back. Got all new mani and intake studs, new gaskets and everything i need to put it back on. But last question:

When it comes to setting the timing, what do i need to do to get the crank and head on correct time? BTW this is the first time i have done this, so detailed instructions prefered. Thanks!

Read the FSM it should tell you... Essentially you just put the crank to TDC #1, rotate the cam and install the chain. There should be marks to line everythign up with, the FSM will tell where they are. GL man, fuck blown HG's
