C's short shift with tomei duracon shiftknob
Is anyone else running this combo? If so, does your shifter sit really high? I currently have this setup, and was going to buy a pimpin new shiftboot. I thought, I should ask this first, just in case. Because, I may just have to buy a new short shift kit, if I can't find the solution to this problem. I don't think my shiftknob, has that much to do with it. Also, i'm pretty sure I installed it correctly, since I have been driving it for a long time. Shifts are crisp, and short. Just don't get why it sits so high.

Because it's a full length shifter opposed to a shorter shifter...
It'll be fine

Sorry to get somewhat ot, but i'm actually looking for a new shifter with stock throw distances. initially i was set on the nismo shifter. however, it seems like the C's are a bit cheaper than the Nismo units. if thats the case, the C's would prob be a better buy. back on topic. to the OT, try throwing back on your stock shift knob onto the C's shifter and see if that helps. At the very least you'll find out whether it was the new shiftknob or the actual shifter (or a bit of both) that contributes to the height of the overall shifter setup. BTW - thanks a lot for the info! coincidently, i happen to be very interested in long shifter, and i like the idea of rubber based shiftknob. one man's trash is another's treasure I guess. |

C's shifter is a short throw shifter. NISMO is stock throw, with a more solid feel. Both are the same physical height as stock. Most "short shifters" will shorten the throw, but the physical height will be the same. You could always cut the shaft down shorter, although you may have to turn the big bulge down on a lathe and rethread it, and that may be more work than you want to do.

what I'd like to know is how the stock shifter differs from the nismo unit. ppl frequently note on different threads and merchant sites that the nismo shifter is somehow more 'solid', while retaining close (if not exact) to oem shift distances. my guess is that the difference is prob due to stiffer bushings, or it could be just psychological.
It may not be very scientific, but it prob choosing the Nismo shifter is the safest choice. at the very least, it can't be worse than stock. note that I haven't actually purchased or decided on a shifter yet. im still discussing what I plan to replace my worn out sloppy shifter with. nismo seems to be the best bet so far. The HKS shift return spring kit seems like an interesting gimmick to play with too, as it seems to allow the user to adjust the degree of stiffness for the shifter feel. its a shame its kinda pricey, but maybe I'll check it out; http://www.frsport.com/HKS_27006_AN0...ET_p_1353.html Last edited by ronmcdon; 05-01-2007 at 01:24 AM.. |

was that a typo? I was under the impression that B&M's were more expesive than the C's. i thought the C's was around $190, while the B&M's were around $240. Which happens to be better is a matter of personal preference. get in touch with ppl who have them and decide for yourself. I had the chance to mess with someone's Nismo shifter and I liked it very much.

I have heard good, and bad things about the B&M short shifter. Even with their newest version, I heard it's still noisy, at certain rpm's/speed. I'm very happy with my c's. The shifting, is precise, and crisp. Also, my tomei duracon shiftknob is ftw action. It doesn't heat up, even when it's sitting in direct sunlight. Get's warm, but nothing more. The only reason I brought this up, is because I was thinking, that it would look funny with the new shiftboot. Since, it seems longer than stock, an inch, or inch and a half would be sticking past the boot, not including the shift knob. Oh well, i'll just get the boot, and see how it looks. Off topic, but I am looking for some parts. I only got the rubber accordian, piece, that surrounds the shifter, from the tranny. I need everything else, that goes from the tranny, to the shifter, including all the bolts.

haha the b&m is awesome....its ridiculously short and somewhat notchy. and yes it does vibrate at high rpms. on my car it vibrates above 5000. but its a small price to pay for the shortness of the throw.

I replace the metal shiftnob from the B&M shifter to a nismo plastic one and it doesn't vibrate anymore.
Plus I don't get burn or freeze when I shift during summer/winter.

"sharing is caring"
share your experience and let other learn from it. I think there should be more thread on useful topics like "favorite tool while working on s chasis" "tips and tricks you learn while owning your car" "what not to do list" "to do list" "favorite brand of xoxoxo and why"

yeah that does appear to be the consensus' decision. I tried searching about this before. I haven't read that anyone had actually measured and compared the throw distances, but if there is any difference its prob negligible for the most part.

"best" is a matter of subjective opinion, really.
Some like C's, some like OBX (God, why?) and some just like their soft quiet stockers (PM me if you want to buy one for $cheap.99). My opinion? B&M, and if the rattle is a problem, turn the radio up. I have ALSO found that there is a specific shifter floating about ebay that is a knockoff of the B&M, boasting the SAME shift feel, appearance and (yes, also) that rattle. No one has complained of failures or questionable build quality, I know of a couple of other people ON THIS SITE using it... I had a $200something B&M in my S14 before I cartwheeled it, I sold it after the fact, I have that knockoff in my S13 and I cannot for the life of me figure out why I paid 3 times what I paid for this one for an identically performing B&M. My knob is a custom one, link below the photo in my signature for details on that. |

I have the ebay B&M knock off - I love it minus the buzzing and rattling - its really bad at high RPM - numbs your hand while it rattles your hand - but I am using the metal shift knob it comes with too - a Nismo knob would help this.
I read a while back about fixing the rattling but cant seem to find it now? it may have been on another site? Also you need the stock shifters plastic piece on the bottom that goes into the hole of the stricker arm - as the one that comes with the knock off shifter wont fit into the hole. B&M developed the shifter on MAV1178's s13 then test fitted on Kyle's S14, final version went on my old yellow s13. I've been at their headquarter many times, they have real engineer there that does R&D for them. I gave them test run up and down De soto so they can figure out the noise problem, I told them just get rid of the metal shiftknob which I did later. B&M is my favorite shifter as well, but I can't justify paying over $200 for one. To me, you should only spend a certain amount on a car(it's totally waste of money) and use it on useful mods then expensive name brand stuff(cough ARC).
