noise under my valve cover

Well like it says in the title theres a noise under my sr20's valve cover, i think i may have a loose valve. There is this clicking kinda noise and when i open up the throttle the clicking gets faster. I've gotten some opinions and thats what those opinions have gotten me, possibly a loose valve. I was wondering would it be hard to tighten up a loose valve or is it a very complicated process that i would really need to look into before doing? Any input would be great thanks in advance.

I personally do not own an sr20 but from other variuos replies to your same problem a good concensus is that when the hydraulic lifters get air in them they can make a ticking sound.

Make sure you have enough oil (I'm sure you do and all, but still check)

When my turbo went, I was burning alot of oil, and when it finally got too low, the valvetrain starting ticking....just added more oil and it went away.

has it been siting up for a long time?

Its probably the Hydraulic Lash Adj. If its been sitting for a long time there is a possiblity of air getting in them.

so would i need to bleed the hydrolic lifters to fix the air getting in problem? If so how deep do i have to go under the valve cover to get to the lifters? Do i have to go past the cams?

I don't see how you could get air into the HLA's without running dangerously low on oil, but who knows. To bleed the HLA's you need to remove the cams in order to take them out, then just put them in a bowl filled with oil past the top of the HLA standing straight up, use something like a thick paper clip to push the ball inside back down, you will see air bubbles and should feel it move.

Honestly though I would start with checking your oil level. The chain tensioner depends on good oil pressure, thus, low oil = slack in chain which would hit the upper timing chain guide and make noise. You should pull the valve cover and remove the upper timing chain guide anyway as its not necessary (sits between the 2 cam gears), then check the chain tension, it shouldn't move much at all but over time the chain can stretch a bit, if theres too much slack you can upgrade the tensioner to the newer style, it has a larger opening to allow more oil into it and a slightly longer rod to take up the extra slack in the chain that develops over time.

if its from the top of the engine its probably timing chain guid touching the chian. you can

1.remove the guide
2.replace the timing chain tensioner

if this doesnt help then

1.replace the oil pump.front cover
2.replace the timing chain

in the proper order of course

heres a link to the fsm
