i noticed in the reflection of a trucks chrome bumper that my far left brake light is out.

the light works when i turn my lights on but i goes out instead of getting brighter when i tap the brake pedel

i switched with brand new bulb and it did the same thing.

Check the inner side of where the bulb comes in contact with the metal piece. Make sure this is clean of any built up gunk over the years. If you look at it and it's yellow, just take a paper towel or wire brush if you like to clean it. This will allow a connection to happen.

I had the same issue soon after I bought my 92. It ended up being a wire attached to the bulb cluster. I'm not sure if it's a ground wire or something else...but...look at all of the screws on the cluster...I believe the one I fixed was on the end of the cluster, and it was plastic. basically, it was unscrewed...I retightened it, fixed my problem.

oh BTW, my symptoms were similar...running lights are fine, but when I step on the brake, lights go out...
