insurance for the extreme modified?
so my s13 is going to be getting paint soon. Ive got an overly extreme level of modifications and prettymuch dont have anything stock left. Ive got a large sum of money and time into my car, and driving it I want to have it covered for a set value of a minimum of 20k. More than likely I will have to get it appraised which isnt a problem. Being that this is an 89 240 its not exactly blue book value.
Who here has a really extreme modified car or specialty unique case they get insured? Im not talking about a company that says they will cover your pink spraypainted steelies, or your cd player. Im talking people who have a very custom very time/money intensive car. I tried asking progressive which is who I have now, but they said they wont cover it they just do book value. Id rather not make this a discussion over whats been done to my car, how someone thinks x part is cool/sucks or go off topic. Can someone point me in a good direction? |

You're looking for specialty auto insurance. Mostly used by Classics, street rods and show cars.
You come to an agreement to what the car is worth. Some are name your price some need proof of value. To qualify it must be a pleasure only vehicle (5k,3k,2k,1k mileage limits). Usually has to be Garaged. Over 25 and other restrictions may be placed. Start by searching for companies that are A rated by http://ambest.com/ in your state and start shopping. If you are set on $20k then you need a "Agreed Value" policy. That way the value never changes.

Intrested this topic also. My car will be to that level soon. How do you go about proving the value. I know it will need to be appriased. Is there anything things that would help get it down easier?

did your insurance company agree to the appraised amount and adjust your rates? i can get my car appraised for 50k and then drive it into a tree. That doesnt mean they will give me 50k because I had a sheet of paper, since I was only paying for coverage for a 1k car in the first place.

not always true. You should already submit the appraisal to your insurance company alraedy. You cannot submit it after it get stolen. Double check with your agent ASAP if I were you to see if all modification are covered. I know Mercury does it. |

im sure theres a cap though within reason. If you have a good company they might bend the value a few hundred bux for a radio or rims... they can just list the car as better condition than it is when they submit the paperwork. but not for the amount im talking about, not if you have wads of time and investment you want covered...

Make sure you and your insurance broker are 100% sure of the agreements that you make, otherwise if something happens, the insurance will say they will not cover you and you will be shit out of luck. I highly highly recommend you read this here... this will answer all of your questions, it sure answered a lot of mine when I was searching around:

Most of the big companies are dropping heavily modified vehicles. My car and mods were covered by allstate pretty much since I got my S14 but last year they dropped the coverage on my modifications and now only offer book value. To cover any kind of modded car you pretty much need to go independent. If your car is gonna be tracked that just makes it heaps harder too.

Don't know if it helps but AAA adjusted my return when I provided them with recepts for the mods I had on my old S14. A similar thing happened with a friend when his Z32 was totaled. They won't for stock replaced parts as they consider that general maintenance.
Freaq may have something to say on this topic since he did mention he was looking to insure his RBd S13 for value. |

Mano,
It use to be like that. Not anymore. Insurance company i think got fed up with it. They are paying out for "mods" when you are paying to cover a stock car. They finally realize they can capitalize on it by making you insure you "mods". Bu then some company do not find it a good idea because with mods, there tend to be racer and what not. |

fwiw I talked to metlife and if I wanted to have the car garaged in mass and driven in mass with a 500$ deductible and a stated value of 20,000 it would be 1800 a year... Very reasonable for what it is

isnt it called comprehensive insurance? i talked to my agent about this a while back and what ive understand is, all the modification, parts, labor etc etc has to be documented and done by a legit shop. hope that works out for you.

Hi, try checking out this site, might help you with your concern
http://www.oneshopinsurance.com I was amazed with the premiums I was quoted on. The entire quote was automated, simple questions and straight forward answers.

id like to make the recommendation of Wawanesa (CA or OR only), as long as you have receipts to submit to them, you pay an extra cost, for 3000$ it cost me 100$ a year. i just bought 10k worth of stuff and added it. Therefore my car is covered completely. Pretty cool.

yeah, look into collectible Car insurance. I know Hagerty advertises no mileage restrictions as long as you don't drive it to work, and it is insured to an 'agreed value'. If you've dumped that much into your car, you should have/be thinking about getting a DD anyway.

It depends on insurance. I go thru USAA and they told me that, as long as i keep the receipts, they will cover me. My roomie wrecked his 91 and blue book was only $3k tops, but since he had a system, rims, suspension and other mods, they cut him a check for almost $8k.

Theres usually some leeway with cutting checks. That falls into that category. I know no matter what I go with they usually factor in up to 1k in audio added on top, stuff like that.
Bump to the thread for some very useful info. Keep in mind my experience is in New Hampshire and your states policies might be different. First I tried going through a lot of the known insurance companies for classic cars (jc, hagarty, etc) They require what I cant meet. They all need the car kept in a locked garage when not in use. Most of them have age requirements like 25/26, driving record requirements like 1 ticket or less, Age restrictions like 20-25 years or older, and mileage restrictions... like 3000 miles a year. I Did some talking to the girlfriend a member of my regional 240one.com forums who writes insurance policies for Metlife and metga (specialties division of metlife). I have had metlife before and they have never given me any crap for anything I have ever needed so I was thrilled. Turns out our cars qualify for metga's classic car stated value policy! Gotta be metGA not metlife, and gotta go through an agent directly. NO mileage restriction, NO parking restrictions, NO agr restrictions, NO record restrictions. She told me to qualify it has to be: 10 years or older (sorry 98 guys! Maybe next year) not driven for more than 6 months out of the year (who winter drives a car they put alot of cash into?) Gotta get pictures of the car, and get an appraised value Then they insure you for a stated value and your quote for that isnt supposed to be obnoxiously larger than your standard quote. I wanna say my standard value quote was about another 300 bux for a 6 month policy with really low deductables, collision, and high coverages (I have my corolla insured there year round this is a second car). Creme de le creme insurance. I am in the process of getting this all done now for nh. She does NH and Maine policies, and another lady in her office does mass policies. Her name is Ann and I will send her number to whomever requests it. I am still in process of getting everything going so when I have solid numbers and everything started I will follow up to this post. I figured it was MORE than useful to people like me who aren't me in the same boat. I had to have called 15 insurance companies the last freakin month. I will get the number for the lady who does mass policies too. Dealing with 1 person has been awesome and I have nothing but good things to say about this lady. Lookin GREAT! |

Hagerty has been a longstanding establishment. Also consider Grundy Worldwide who has been around just as long. They can customize an insurance policy also.

yea I called both. For someone who doesnt meet all of those hefty requirements this was my only option. Many people might find themself in the same boat- this gives them an option.
If I couldn't have done this through metlife I woulda been SCREWED. No other company woulda covered me for what I want and I couldn't have picked a company I am more happy with to do it. alot of the options you have for classic or specialty insurance really scrutinize and can be hard to deal with |
