I have a 91 with 110k

Alright, ive read every post on here bout the guides and the noise they make, all of them on freshalloy, and ive read about it on 240sx.org.  lets just say i have read a lot stuff about it, and am not sure what the best course of action is cause it seemed i read a lot of different information on how to solve the issue on each post.

so i just want someone to clear up what can be done, including removing the top guide, if there is a metal replacement for that guide that i have read about, if since i hear the noise at idle all the time if my tensioners are not gettin enough oil pressure to keep the chain from slacking and hittin the guides causing the noise and if that is the root of the problem and removin the top guide would only be a temporary solution?

alright ne one that knows, dive right in

i had the same problem with my 91 and i didnt know what to do so i had to bite the bullet and take it to nissan.  what had happened was a piece of the guide was broken off so they just took it out permanently and said that theres no real purpose for it.  However, im not too sure if it was the top guide.  hope this helps a little bit

On the DOHC Engines, there is a top chaining which usually goes bad.  Honestly, just take it out and dont replace it.  You will waste Over 100 bucks on replacing this USELESS part!

Just remove the valve cover, remove the top guide.  Replace the gasket. Get the proper bolt pattern bolt pattern to putting the valve cover back.  Bingo, done.  However if it is the side tensioner, then you must replace it, along with the tensioner.  If you are not familiar with any of this, or are fearful of in any way of doing this, bring it to a mechanics shop.  DO NOT bring it to nissan, they will only take hundreds of dollars from you for an hour of work and a hundred dollar part.  300 dollars at your local mechanic should get you a chain replacement, new tensioner and new guide(s).

Good luck.  Post your findings. Thanks.

You can be hitting the guide without having issues with the tensioners so for many people, removing the top guide solves the problem.

This is true to. However a little slack in your timing chain could also cause this rattle noise.  However, if it s ratting while its running, its more than likely your chain will need replacing too as well.  If you want to be safe, or you can take the chance of needing a new drivetrain ... i mean, heave, 300 bucks worth of parts/labor vs. 2000 dollars worth of parts/labor.
