I personally like to go through all the gears anyway just because it gives me a better feel of how much of a blip I need to give the gas pedal to match the revs.

casual driving
15mph shift to 2nd gear 25mph shift to 3rd gear 35mph shift to 4th gear 45+mph shift to 5th gear (aka overdrive) saves gas by locking the torque converter and lowering rpms taken from owners manual my racing choices 2nd shift to 30-35 3rd shift to 50-60 4th shift to ? never redlined 3rd gear yet i like ur method transient....ill use it.....im more worried about my can than the time |

It can be done, you just have to make sure you match the rpm's to the gear. If you grinded, you weren't revving the engine enough to match the synchros. I can do it fairly easily, you just need to be familiar with what speed is best for which gear. For instance coming up to my block i'll be in 4th, as i come up to my block I apply the brake......and once I reach a certain point I shift to second and make the turn.

If you're just downshifting, you should be able to get it in to 3 at 45 mph fine. That'll put you at what 3750-4000rpm?
Well, if you're double clutching to rev-match, here's a tip: after clutch and putting it in neutral, push the clutch in and blip the throttle to an estimated rpm at the speed you're driving while slightly pushing your shifter in the gear you want. When you've rev-matched, the shifter should slide in to the gear easily. Dunno if I explained that correctly, it's too early in the morning, so correct me if I missed anything.

Even if you revmatch, you may still grind. You need to double-clutch to spin up the idlers in the transmission to the matching speed as well. Rev matching with the clutch in will only match engine RPM, not transmission gears.

sometimes double clutching won't help my transmission. i have to push in the clutch, take it out of 5th, go to 2nd gear, then 3rd, rev match (to save wear on the clutch) then let out.

If you have 5 speeds, you have a manual obviously, and if you have a manual, I would love to see you lock up your torque converter =) hahahaha, that's damn funny.

It helps to guide it from 5-4-3 (clutch in, brake, 5-4-3, clutch out. I think it's tricky to hit 3rd just right unless you guide it that way. Doable - but, for me, slower and more likely to get a refusal b/c I'm too close to 1st <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/nervous.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':nervous:'> or 5th.
