Handeling problem

2 months ago I bought a 1995 JDM S14 Silvia automatic with about 20k miles. I was impressed how well it handles. Two weeks ago I bought another, this time a 5 speed with 25k miles. Both are DE's. The 5 speed is as clean as the auto inside and out. However, going over a bump in the road at 100mph with the 5 speed cause the car to jump an entire lane. scared the crap out of me. The the automatic tracks straight ahead under worse condition. The car feels darty and nervous very unpredictable. I believe the rear end is acting up. The car feels downright dangerous to drive even at lower speeds.
Where should I begin looking for the problem?

suspension bushings, tie rod ends, ball joints, diff bushings, motor/tranny mounts, shocks, springs, tires, wheel bearings etc. etc. etc.


get under it and have a lookie

Sounds like your dampeners are blown, hence you probably get the feeling that you're riding on the spring. Could also be you have some suspension play, like someone said previous you should change out your suspension bushings as wheel. Good change those are worn out badly.

best way is to go look under your 5spd one. its an old car so it will likely have worn/broken bushings.
tension rods, outer tie rod ends, etc

whats going on is bumpsteer.. caused by worn bushings. or a improperly lowered car...if cars ride is stock then bushings are bad or loose.

First & foremost...please slow down....100 mph is not a safe speed in ANY car. The life you save may be your own!! Don't endanger your life or the lives of others just for a few minutues of driving fast....IT"S NOT WORTH IT!! IF you decide to drive fast, then please save it for the track. At least the paramedics will be there within seconds to pull what's left of you out after you crash...as opposed to several minutes on the freeway or street.

With that said. START SIMPLE!! ...Check your tire pressure.

All four tires should be running at least 32 pounds per inch (PSI??) minimum. Anything lower may cause your car to feel squirly/darty, (spl??). Inspect your tires also. Check to see that they are the same size....example...225/55/16. 225 = tire width, 55 = tire height & 16 = tire diameter. If you have four different tires by four different manufacturers at four different heights then your suspension will feel squirly, (spl??).

If your tires check out to be the same, (manufacturer, height, width, tire pressure, etc), then look for abnormal wear....abnormal wear is usually an indication of poor or improper alignment and/or worn or blown shocks.

Before you do any work to the car though, take your car to three different shops & have them quote you a price to repair whatever they find wrong on your car. Have them point out everything they see as wrong & have them write you an estimate. The estimate should include ALL parts & labor. If the shops are run by qualified honest mechanics they should all tell you the same thing....Don't let them try to rip you off!!
