I read someone's post about removing the speed cut on an S14 a couple days ago and thought I would try it on my S13. It involved disconnecting the 5th gear sensor on the trans and cutting a yellow ECU wire with a green stripe and two silver dots every inch or so. On the S13 (at least mine) there is no such wire, but a yellow wire with a green stripe and a single silver band about every inch. There's actually two such wires, but only one goes into the ECU while the other bypasses it. I checked my Chilton's schematic and confirmed that this is still the speedo wire. I figured theres enough slack to splice it back together if it didn't work, so I went ahead and cut the one going into the ECU. Whoo-hoo, I took it out in the country and managed to wrap the speedo needle to the first odometer number! Although this proceedure is supposed to turn on the check engine light on the S14, mine has not come on. It flashes on startup, so I'm sure it works. I might put a switch in the kickpanel so I can turn it on or off if the light ever goes on. The 5th gear sensor is the same as the S14, its the rearmost one in the cluster of three small sensors on the right side of the tranny. Hope this helps somebody out there. BTW, my S13 is a '91 with the stock KA24DE and ECU. And of course, I'm not responsible if you screw up, get a ticket, blah blah blah, etc.

Heh, you're my hero
I read that one post and allt he side effects scared me off, then at Radio Shack today, I saw some switches I could mount on the kick panel if I extended the wires. Just like you are thinking about doing.

hell, I may try that. I tried to whoop up on an automatic riced out Saturn SC2 on the interstate and I had it until I was coming up to my governor, so I backed off

My understanding of it is the tranny has a sensor on the output shaft of the tranny to measure absolute speed. However there is also a sensor to tell what gear you are in. If you are in 5th it makes the rev limit lower.

For a demonstration of this, put it in 5th while stopped, and rev it up while hodling the clutch down. It will only let you rev to arround 5000something.

So there were no negative effects upon cutting this wire?

there is one, apparently once you cut the wire the ecu goes into some kinda "warning mode" or something and no longer stores codes or something, i dunno, was in the last speed limiter removal post a few weeks back

Wich two wires are we talking about here, exactly? Am I correct in assuming that if you disconnect the speed sensor, you render your speedometer useless, making this modification useful only for racing purposes, not for determining top speed? Anyway, where is the fifth gear sensor, and is the crucial wire on the SR20 still yellow w/green? All I remember hooking up when doing the swap was the reverse, and speed sensor. It's been a while, though...
We are still talking about SR20's here, right?

hey, I tried that and for some reason, my car wouldn't let me rev past 4500 in 4th gear, and 4000 in fifth, plus I couldn't go over 90! what gives? is this because I could have pulled off the wrong tranny sensor? which one am I supposed to pull off?
