Leaky Injector
|
powersteering leak = (
So the steering in my 90 240 has been acting up recently. When i turn the wheel at full lock the power steering belt stops moving which causes the steering wheel to pulsate. So i got under the car and noticed that when i lock the drivers side wheel, fluid stars leaking out of the tie rod dust boot, and weird gurgling sound happens.Does this mean the rack is fked up?, or does it mean i need new tie rods?. The bushings are a little worn on the drivers side inner tie rod but the rod itself is not bent or anything....

I am not positive, if its a leak or not, but I read on a few forums that on 240s, using power steering fluid causes the seals to deteriorate, and that you have to use, don't quote me on this but, automatic transmission fluid. I could be wrong on the alternate fluid to use, but I know that using the power steering fluid has been known to eat away at the seals. I am not sure what all needs replacing, but i'm sure a search can find out more details.

Leaky Injector

its weird, it only leaks when i jack up the car, i jacked it up from the subframe, and it would leak out with the tires in the air, but when i lower the car and do the same thing, it doesnt leak at all... but the powersteering belt still gets stuck at full lock, maybe the p/s pump is worn?

ur steering rack is getting to the point of being useless and broken. it shouldnt leak at all period. ull need to fix the seals or get a refurbished rack and sometimes whenever the rack starts to go out/leak, ur ps pump goes out along with the rack. so the sooner u fix that rack, the sooner u can preserve that ps pump.
ALSO frsh2fourty is right, u need to use AT fluid and NOT POWER STEERING fluid. ![]() |

yeah i'd get a new rack. if you have aftermarket inner tie rod ends, and you plan on keeping them, i'd pull them. most new racks come with new inner tie rod ends and require a core of the old rack and pinion.
you're right about the fluid though. ive worked on 100% unmolested s13s where they use automatic transmission fluid. auto trans fluid helps with seals and such becaus when it heats up, it expands, so if you have a small leak and arent running tranny fluid already, you can throw some in at a first step towards fixing the leak.

Auto tranny fluid? Wow, never knew thanks a lot for that info.
My buddies is leakin to but its leakin from that joint pivot point where you move the steering wheel left to right, it oozes out of that, but im assuming i can just replace that and be good? I think its like a seal in there. |

Yeah bro, just get a new rack like burnsauto said. My rack was doing the same thing. So i replaced it. Its really easy to do. The atf stuff is true. My refurbished one came with atf in it. thats how I found out about the ATF for the power steering. I payed 100 for mine.

A lil off topic but if you guys are going out and buying racks see if they have any hicas racks. I have one in my car and I love it. Steering is quicker and feels better. Also get aftermarket bushings for the rack. That is one over looked part that makes a world of difference
