Brake booster question
so i was parting out my front clip today because i'm getting rid of it. i noticed the brake booster looks different than the one on my s13 240. it seems to be the same diameter, but it's ~.75 inches deeper. so of course, the JDM 180sx calipers/rotors are larger than stock 240sx USDM calipers/rotors, so i'm guessing this larger brake booster provides better stopping power? i was wondering if any of you guys noticed this as well, and if anyone has bolted on the JDM booster onto their 240. Since it's bigger and is in better condition, i'm probably just going to bolt it on but wanted to hear some of your opinions first. (and before anyone comments on the leaves, yes i cleaned them off lol)
here's a pic: ![]()

The OE US 5speed unit is single chamber, 230mm. Some of the JDM boosters as well as all S14 auto/ABS US cars are dual chamber 205mm/180mm.

Yeah the Z32 booster is a squeeze to get in the S-chassis... the JDM S14/S15 Booster is much easier and works just as well.
Have fun... and be sure to adjust the plunger. -Drew |

The purpose of the brake booster is to decrease pedal effort. The larger the booster, the easier the pedal effort.
I prefer smaller boosters because it's easier to modulate. Look at JDM brake boosters and compare it with the USDM. Then tell me if you still want to bolt it on. Hint: look at the vacuum port. |

well everyone had a good point.
thanks r240na, but it definitely came out of an s13 clip. do you think perhaps the original owner bolted this booster on from an s13? because this clip didn't have ABS. g6civcx, you made a good point, but if if i were to bolt it on, i can just run a longer vacuum hose.

this is just a guess, but could you just flip the booster over so the vacuum port is on the proper side?
drew, do you know the dimensions of the z32 booster? i was planning on going that route, but if the ABS/auto/JDM booster is close enough, i'm all for it. here it is. z32 - Primary 230mm (9.06in) - Secondary 205mm (8.07in)

^--that is also a pretty good idea. i don't see why you couldn't flip it over, it's just a diaphragm inside, so it probably doesn't matter. but still, i'm just going to run a longer vac line...

Z32 is much larger then the USDM and JDM Boosters (S-Chassis)... Its a bitch to get in because of the diameter... you will be vey very tight against the strut tower while squeezing it in!!
You will spend more time adjusting the plunger then getting the the booster though. you have to take the MC off everytime, adjust, replace, test, repeat... -Drew |

thanks drew, didn't know that would be a problem. that suprising though since the z32 primary is the same diameter as the s14 manual booster. maybe the extra thickness with the large diameter is what makes it hard.
ABS/auto booster for me. anybody got one?

I run the s13 sr booster because, it was in better shape and easier to get to the 02 sensor. didn't modify anything that i can remember. Probably go back if I go top-mount.
