Guys sliding on mostly stock KA's ? for ya

Sparknotes: Guys sliding on mostly stock DOHC KA motors what size/kind of tires are you doing it on?

Long Verison: What are you running for wheels/tires? I have intake and exhaust IE stock and a J30 LSD. I am looking to hit some events this upcoming season and I recently bought some wheels. They 9.5" wide rears and 7" wide fronts. I am thinking my stock DOHC will have a real tough time keeping 9.5" of some decent tires spinning but I got them for the street. I also have a different pair 7" wide for the rear but I dont know if it will even handle that with good rubber. So again my question is what wheels and tires are you guys sliding on? I see lots of guys just running stock SE wheels. Are you running Federals, Falken, something similar like lots of guys on here? I plan on buying a different set of tires for the other 7" wide pair if possible as a drift set. Or if that is not practical on a stock KA then run dif tires on the stock SE alloys.

I would say dumpster tires. It really depends on the level you are at? Are you just starting out or what? I'm assuming from your question you're just starting out. Rock the stock wheels with whatever tires you can pickup in the rear. It will make your car seem a lot more powerful then it is. You will not be moving as fast as the other drivers but it will help you get used to the car in a drift + it will be easy on the wallet. Run good rubber in the front for sure though.

On a 17 x 8
I've drifted 235 50 17 Yokohama S-drives @ 45, too much grip.
235 40 17 Kumho Ecsta ASX's @ 45, weren't bad... still a little too much grip.
I think a 225 would be perfect, however I like my car to be pretty neutral.
I think BRIAN would be the best guy to ask, he kills on a stock KA.

I did this on 215/45 used tires on a 9" wheel



215's on a 9 are money imo, run pretty high pressure in them, like 40 or a bit more, depends on what tire you have. Good to go, as long as you aren't a pussy and afraid to beat on your car.

15's are easier

When I was 15's I just ran whatever tires I could in the back

For the fronts I'd try to run a semi decent tire, or at least a poo poo tire with lot of tread

For a while I ran 17x9 fronts with 15x7 on the back at the track (cheap guy style)

But when I went to 17x9+15 all around with 215/45/17 it was fine

In fact I think the car felt better at that point

No need real high pressure, but it helps

Just gotta drive faster on the track

Plus 17's look better in the pics

I liked sliding on 17's much better than 15's, felt much more solid.

wasn't really any harder to slide I thought, was much better feeling though.

Especially better than a 17/15 staggar, that shit sucks.

15 would be the easiest to slide with a ka but with 17 get some light weight wheels its a bitch to try to spin 29lbs shitty sportmaxs. I would go 17x9 or 8 and 215/40 for tire size.

On a serious note, Ived noticed most underpowered ka guys rock 15" steelies in the back.

i ran 15s all around on my KA.. my buddy runs 17s and sometimes he doesnt get the over steering he is looking for.. with 15 over steer is ohh so easy!

Brian i think rocks 18s? and he kills them in is pretty stock KA, i think his suspension helps out also.

Thanks for all the input, the wheels I got are 17's. They are Falken Hanabi's so they are pretty light for 17's. I got 6 of em, four in 17 X 7 and two in 17 X 9.5 for rear. I think I will prolly run the 17 X 7's all around with a mad stretched tire in the rear and adjust pressure as I think it feels the best. I am just starting out so +1 for that guess. I already have 4 hard crappy tires that I got when I bought the car so I will use those first, then try the Hanabi with better tires. Worst case scenario I like the 15's more and I can sell the extra pair of Hanabi for more tires

I do this.

I have a stock KA... cone filter and exhaust.

front - 17x9 215/40-17 Federal SS595
rear - 17x9 215/45-17 Federal SS595

easy to spin these. they are perfect for me.
I use them brand new. That is when I love them the best.


Different tires work different though.


example - i USED to run 225/45-17 Falken ST115. I LOVED them. perfect they were.
Then one day I tried the 225/45-17 Federals..... SUCKED. they (in my opinion) are more grippy and probably even run a little wider.
So this is why I moved down to the 215/45 federal. They feel the same as the slightly larger Falkens.

just like brian i run a 215 40/45 17 Federals on either a 9 or 9.5 inch rim you just have to get mean with it. BTW get rid of that 7inch wide rim for your fronts and get some 9 atleast

Stock KA. Only AEM intake and 4" exhaust.
F:17x9 RT-615 235/40
R:17x9 ST-115 245/40
VLSD Stock stock clutch.

I drift just fine. Just need a bit more speed going into the drift that's it.

Re-route your washer fluid hoses to point at the contact patches of your rear tires. Voila! Now pull on that wiper lever, AUTOMATIC LOSS OF REAR TIRE CONTROL!!!!!!!!!! AND it saves on tire life.

lol i bought lines and an extra reservoir so i could fill it with bleach for lots of smoke.

I never got to it tho since i how have a sr and i dont need the water to help me slide.
