Wont start Bad Solenoid? or starter? how do i replace either?

My 93 s13 ka24de just decided not to start today and after i had to push it and start in gear it started. I know this means either a bad cellnoid or starter how do you replace a cellnoid and is it fairly simple since i am away from home and my major tools. thanks

try to take a screw driver or something metal and touch the two leads on the solenoid with the key in the on position. If that works it's your solenoid, or you can try the other method of smacking the hell out of it with a hammer

ok, i'll be a little more helpful.

to determine if your SOLENOID has gone bad, you can take your entire starter assembly to auto zone and they will test it for you. this can end up saving you time and money. if it tests good, you might have bad connections, a bad battery, a bad alternator, the list can go on.

if it tests bad, then rebuild it or get a new one.

my bad i spelled solenoid wrong but people spell it a million different ways. anyway Im just gonna drop a new starter in cause solenoids cost a whole 20 bucks less so fuck it my starters old as shit anyway. thanks for the advice though guys.

I think you mean solenoid. The starter solenoid is part of the starter on pretty much all "modern" cars. If the solenoid takes a shit then you need a starter.

I would at least check for power at the starter before I go replacing it. The problem could be elsewhere. Does it 'click' when you turn the key, if so the solenoid is working but the armbature is broken (aka bang it with a hammer till it starts). If it doesnt click, you might not be getting power down there (relay or ign switch problem). Breaking out a test light is cheaper than throwing parts at something.

MadMarverick is right, my car wouldnt start so i replaced the starter w/o checking anything and later on, my car wouldnt start again and i found out it was just my + battery cable had corrosion in it. and that took me a few minutes to figure out. i would have rather just replaced a battery cable than a stater in the first place.

There is only one way to spell it, so if there are "a million ways" you've seen it spelled, 999,999 were wrong
