gas gauge wrong

ok when ever I full tank my car the gas gauge works fine. But when ever I reach under half tank the needle keeps dropping. It drops way under the empty mark. Does that mean the float in the gas tank is bad?

sounds more like the fuel sender unit has taken a dump. if the float was junk it wouldn't work across the whole range, not just under half.

i agree on a bad sending unit. the level sensor is a rheastat that's built into the tank unit. you can get a new tank unit and use your fuel pump, or just get a whole new assembly, but the pump and the rest of the unit are separate entities

i had a similar problem due to the wiring, but if it just started happening after working fine then its probably the sending unit

Is it stuck? Or just not sending period.
If its stuck,

Take out the bobber shake it a few times to get it loose and stick it back into the fuel tank.

if its not sending
It's a bad sending unit..

New fuel pump? That has nothing to do with it.

Like mentioned above check your sending unit. Mine came off the bracket and my guage was AFU first reading full then it was all over the place. After i pulled it and noticed it was in the bottom on the tank I remounted and its somewhat correct.

Not sure but I assume the low level indicator is sent from the sending unit also? Can anyone verify this? (s14)

That's just the gas sloshing around in the tank, changing the position of the floater.

Like everyone has said, check your sending unit.
Let us know if that isn't it.
Otherwise,

I didn't see a point in starting a new thread but I have a similar issue on my base model zenki s14 w/ka...except my fuel gauge works fine but my fuel light never comes on. I pulled the cluster and replaced the bulb and it still doesn't come on. Would this be a sending unit/wiring related issue too? I have a friend who insists that base model s14's do not have the gas light hooked up...I think he's full of it.

base model S14's don't have the light hooked up? every car i've ever seen had a gas light. my old ass 1989 corolla had a gas light. i think he's full of it but maybe im wrong...

have you tried running it dry and the light never came on? A few times my light didn't come on and the entire needle was under the E. i was afraid i would be stranded on the interstate but i figured i still had some time if the light hadn't come on yet
