Well I could probably come up with more things the "SX" in 240SX signifies, but i wanted to see if you guys now the actual meaning to it. (perhaps it means SILVIA NOT HERE)

usually the "X" in nissan vehicles is extra weight added that is due to luxury crap. I.e. "280ZX" 300ZX" and I believe the S stood for some height number or something. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'> i could be wrong..

Nissan wanted it to have a "lil brother" image to the Z and ZX seris so the came up with SX. Personally I think they used S cause it is a "sporty" sounding letter and Z but flipped. X is ussually luxurry according to some but nissan never said what it means so I believe, If so the current 350Z should have it.

i always thought it denoted chassis number with x instead of number ex.

200sx=s12
89-94 240sx=s13
95-98 240sx=s14

300zx-forget the years each was made but z31 z32 z33 etc..., just my opinion, not saying its right &nbsp;<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''>

The naming convention for nissan's sports cars is usually some derivative of the engine displacement (240z, 2.4 liter i6, 300zx, 3.0 liter v6, 240sx, 2.4 liter i4). Disregard the '80s 200sx. . . those had all sorts of engines in them. This is followed by the chassis code (z for z*, etc, s for s*). Again, disregard the errant 200sx in the '90s, that was nothing more than a sentra with new taillights.

X as far as I know has no meaning. . . It sounds nifty and came about in the 80s. Should be explanation enough. The 80's everything had to have some little addition to make it sound snazzy (Macintosh Plus, etc.)

Don't ever say Super Xtreme again or I'm going to have to kick your ass.

It actually stands for "Exreme Sex" but they found that people were offended so that they had to switch to letters to "SX" so it wouldn't be as obvious.

I would bet that Mr. K had something to do with it originally, just like renaming "Fairlady Z" to "240Z". &nbsp;The first "SX" was actually the '76 200SX (S10). &nbsp;Performance cars with feminine names like Fairlady and Silvia just don't fly here, especially in the '70s in the face of American musclecars with all sorts of masculine names. &nbsp;So, take the displacement (2.0L from the Z20 engine), add on the chassis code and an X for eXtra coolness, and there you go, 200SX.

They used 'S' for the chassis name and 'X' to signify "sporty". &nbsp;Basically Nissan used "SX" the way that america uses "GT" to signify a fast and/or sporty sexy car. &nbsp;But both terms are outdated IMO. &nbsp;<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/dozingoff.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''>

correct except the first Silvia/200sx here in the states came with a L20b not a Z20 that would not come about till the 80's

Doh, you caught me. &nbsp;The Z20 came in the S110 200SX, actually '79 but close enough to the '80s <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''>

Someone said this a long time ago and it stuck with me. &nbsp;SX = "Silvia Type X" . &nbsp;Don't know if it is true, but it works for me.
