Insurance Companies for Modified Cars?

I've been researching online and called a few places about getting a modified 240sx insured. Most places didn't care if I added performance parts (turbo, FMIC, etc) to the car. But almost all of them cared that I had coilovers. They said I could put a lift kit or hydraulics on it and it would be covered, but not coilovers.

So what Insurance COMPANY are you guys using? I don't care how much your paying. I'm over 25, not a single moving violation, so I'm good to go. I just need to know what companies will cover me if I get into an accident with my modified car without automatically giving me fault because I have suspension work done.

Just go AAA or something. Don't mention the mods. It isn't worth it.

Just get comprehensive.

If it isn't your fault, you'll come up in the end.

yeah and lets face it, most of us buy and sell s chassis parts like theya re going out of style and generally insurance won't cover anything you don't have a receipt for... at least mine doesn't...

Two insurance agents there are also car enthusiasts, you can talk to either Rick or Eddie to see what they can do regarding aftermarket performance parts equipped vehicles. Let them know that Kevin sent you. I currently don't have a car, but I do have 2 of my Ruckus insured from Joyride. Great service and price.

most car insurance companies will also insure your car for a "face value", which means you can insure you S13 for $20,000 and pay the premium on that....so in a sense if its totaled or stolen you will get up to 20K...

i asked my insurance agent on that, and he said that was my only option other than get classic car insurance from a outside company...i have AAA btw

good luck with it!

I'm just afraid that if something does happen and I'm at fault. I'll lose my car completely and my insurance won't cover me at all. Leaving me to pay someone else's car medical and other bills. Basically leaving me with nothing.

Can't afford that risk. *laugh*

I crashed my old 240sx about 8 years ago and State Farm would not cover anything i had reciepts for. i gave them 10k in reciepts and they offered me 3k for the car. i ended up getting 6.5k but it took 6 months and tons of phone calls.

If you're really serious about it, Hagerty insurance can help you out, it's where we send anybody we can't cover due to modifications.

I use state farm for all four of my cars. The purple 240 in my sig is insured as a "weekend" car with $25,000 worth of coverage and I pay $82 every 6 months.Much of that price comes from a good driving record and multiple car discounts.I was told to keep all my reciepts and was never asked any questions about my mods.

Are they real strict on the it being a "weekend " car ? What happens if you get into an accident and it's not a weekend ? Do they cover it at all ?

4 G's isn't really a lot considering coilover can set you back $ 1,500 to 2 g's or more easily, and complete entry level turbo systems would make the rest and then some. I guess it's better than not being covered at all.

From my experience and speaking to multiple insurance companies and my personal body shops. the coverage and how easily you'll get it really depends on your:
1. local insurance company (so mercury in LA and mercury in St. Louis may differ in policy)
2. Estimator: that guy that comes out to inspect damage and deals with the body shop
3. Relationship with body shop and company / estimator

sometimes you get lucky and the insurance company rep has good pull and will be able to do stuff for you guys but with a lot of companies going national, they're coming down on the enforcement of rules and regulation to be "fair"

Yea, ones that I have dealt with.

But, I do most of my work myself, and hook ups with parts, used parts, etc, I have legit receipts for very few things.

i wouldnt count on it. if you have 10k worth of reciepts that the insurance had no idea was on the car. do you think they should cover that? if they knew that you had the parts on your car your premiums would be higher, to cover the expense of replacing your parts if your car gets stolen or crashed.

The more proof the better. You can also get more than Blue Book value by getting prices of a car in comparable condition as yours, to get more leverage on the insurance company. They take street value in consideration.

Be careful what you tell them. Some insurance companies will NOT insure a vehicle if it will be driven as a track car only (too much risk).

Also, if you have personal registration on the vehicle, meaning it is in your name, and not a business or trust or anything, you will need at least state minimum liability insurance.

There can be certain restrictions on "weekend only" cars like tattoo131313's purple beast, such as mileage and mandatory garaging.

My gf works insurance.
