![]() All right guys, someone explain this one to me.
For the second time in as many weeks my CAS has some how come out of sync. Car would be running fine when I shut it down for the day. When I tried starting it the next day it would crank but not catch. Reset the timing and everything ran smoothly until yesterday when the same thing happened again. Anybody knows what would cause this? |

Bolts are tight.
I figured the CAS may just be fuxored (haven't tested it yet), but I don't feel like shelling out a couple hundred bucks for a new CAS if that's not the real problem. Anyone else? |

when you say re-set the cas timing, do you mean physically punching it into the head or the timing light/timing

It could.
But I checked them just to make sure. chain is spot on and guide is on tight. Cam sprockets are good too. Sooooooo...new CAS it is. |

Anyways, im trying to comprehend what you mean by off? Off as in bust out the timing light and spin the CAS without pulling it off completely or completely pulling it off and re-aligning the dots timing? |

Oh okay, well sounds like the gear itself is jumping the cam sprocket...dont think there's much you can do other getting another one. Unless you can find a newer CAS gear and try to swap that one out.
CAS gear made out of plastic or metal??? Cant remember now for the life of me... NM: I looked it up. You might wanna double check the cam gear again, I just dont see how 2 metal gears will skip. One explanation in my head is that the CAS itself isnt sitting all the way in, the gears could basically be not sitting together properly causing it to skip. Then again, hows that gonna be possible? If the CAS isnt sitted all the way in, i'd see it leaking. Unless the CAS gear some how shifted? |

If it is in fact your CAS, dont shell out $300+ for a new distributor, just pick up a used one.
Mine was jacked up so i bought a good used one for $30. Hasnt given me any problems yet. Id rather go used a few times then get a brand new one for $300 when the price difference is that large. |

Thanks for all the help.
To answer some of your questions, yes, I completely took the CAS out and aligned it using the two dots. Oddly enough, according to the FSM the dots are placed differently then on my CAS gear. May just be a difference between S13 and S14 CAS. As far as seating the CAS properly it's pretty much in as far as it goes. Hell I even took the valve cover off to make sure it was alligned properly. Even setting the mating marks up correctly the CAS often ends up misaligned. I have another CAS from my old SR that's just sitting around so I'll probably just throw that in and see how it works. I'm guessing the current CAS has some sort of electrical problems. I'll test it to make sure. According to the FSM the CAS voltage should fluctuate between .something-something volts and 5 volts. We'll see. In other news, I blew my turbo. Yay! Nothing like heaps of oil smoke coming out the tail pipe. Lucky me! ![]() |

UPDATE:
Found the culprit. Turns out the CAS was just fine. Instead, my fuel pump went to shit. Luckily I had a Walbro laying around that I've been meaning to install for some time now. Hooray! |
