My first 240 had no spoiler, and I liked the looks--plus it was easier to wash and dry. I already took off my sunroof cover (since the ice/snow busted it), and I am thinking the spolier removal would complete the aerodynamic look. Does the stock spoiler have that much downforce help? And will there be gaping holes? Is is it hard to do on a 98 SE? Also, is it something I can put back on relatively easy?

Sorry for all the questions, but I have never done this before and I don't want my car to be ghetto-fied if I do this!!

It's not hard to take off at all. You'll have to open the trunk and take off one nut from each side. There we're only two on my 95, I'm assuming it's the same setup on the 98. After the nuts are off, just lift the spoiler straight off. Once again, if your's is like mine, there will be a total of four holes. Two will be about the size of a dime, the other two will be smaller. Hope this helps.

so your car came without the spoiler then you added it back on...now you want to take it off? just explain that and i will be ok. as far as taking the spoiler off it should be really easy. just a few screws. but remember there is going to be about 4-6 screws left on the trunk. look kinda funny but you can get plugs. still funny. personally i would just keep it on. doesn't hurt it. and to help the downforce...really doubt that is why Nissan put it on there. just looks.

well damn...someone answered before me. well if this helps cool. if not just slap me and say shut up.

That first line answers why there is a spoiler on there.

The second one is for 240gurl. The stock spoiler is about 8" from the airstream. It provides absolutly no downforce whatsoever, except the couple pounds it weighs, itself.

you'll also have to change the spring or the thing that pops the trunk open. without the weight of the spoiler to keep the trunk down when you open it, it'll basically shoot open. Unless you don't mind that... You also might want to try a junked base model and use the trunk off of that.

I don't think that the extra weight due to a spoiler would be noticed. It is a big chunk of styrofoam with a plastic coating or paint or something.

for ppl with an s13 fastback.. i took the stock spoiler off my 89 fastback and there are soo many holes.. it wasn't that easy either.. theres four bolts that bolt the spoiler down which isn't that hard to take off.. but then there are 6 additional clips that hold the spoiler down.. taking those off were a bitch.. you need a flat head and patience.. i didn't have either at the time.. so i just yanked the stock spoiler off leaving all the clips on the trunk hatch.. the 6 clips that were connecting the spoiler to the trunk are kinda hard to take out but if you have a flat head screwdriver, its not that hard..

the 6 clips leave holes on your trunk that are the size of a nickel or quarter and 4 little holes for the other bolts.. good thing i have another hatch to put on this car.. i guess i'll jus bondo this trunk up though..

my S14 (1995) has 4 screws holding the spoiler on, 2 in each pillar of the spoiler.

pulling the screws is just a ratchet away, but therer will be 4 approximately 3/16 inch holes in the decklid. These can be plugged with plastic inserts, filled with bondo, or welded. If/when i get around to pulling my spoiler, i will have a friend weld the holes. Each of these methods (save the plugs) would require some kind of painting to not look absolutely 'tarded

No--my first 240 was a 95 non-se and it didn't have a spoiler. I thought it looked alot sleeker than my 98 which has the spoiler stock.

Thanks for the advice! I think I am going to keep it on--I don't have the hook-up for welding/painting the holes, and I don't want to start something I can't finish. However, I might consider it when it warms up.

I'm glad you made up your mind to keep it on, because it looks ghetto when you see the 4 screw holes on the trunk!

yea, there's 4 holes holding the spoiler down. i took my spoiler off because it would rattle like CRAZY with my sub(i got 2 12's) and i like the no spoiler look. nice and clean. and yes, it goes look kinda ghetto with 4 holes in my trunk, haha. i just put some red colored masking tape on it to cover it up. it does the job well enough and no, water/snow does not get into my trunk.

she's got an s14 which means that the spoiler isn't made of styrofoam. if you don't think it'll make a difference, take off the spoiler of an s14 and pop the trunk open. believe me, i have to run back to catch the trunk lid
