Weird ass sound coming from my rear end

First off, I have a 1992 240SX hatch with a stock KA24DE, 5 speed, ABS and a VLSD. (I assume it has a VLSD because all Canadian S13s from 91-93 had a VLSD.) The car has 235,000kms. (146,000 miles)

I've had the car for 3 years and have done around 40,000kms (25,000 miles) and I've never, ever had a noise from the rear end.

It started a few weeks ago and only did it once in a while, but now it's everytime I back up.

That's right, it's ONLY when I back up. I've never heard it in any forward gear.

I happens when I roll and when I accelerate backwards, whether the clutch is in or out, it doesn't change anything, but if I touch the brakes, the noise goes away. If I keep touching the brake pedal, the noise comes back, but if I press harder or take my foot off the brakes, the noise goes away again. I'm 100% it's coming from the rear of the car.

The noise is similar to when you rub your hand on an inflated balloon, that rubbing sound of your skin against the rubber. Sometimes it sounds like a slight knock, it's a very odd sound.

Does anyone have any ideas about what it is abd/or how to check more precisely what the problem is? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Rear brake pads. They generally make more noise in reverse for some reason. Pull them and inspect.

haha I had to pop in the thread and check this out cuz the title jsut made me laugh... Yes I might have the sense of humor of a nine year old but whatever. Sounds like your problem has been addressed as best I could help too. I would say rear brake pads and the best solution? Z32 upgrade cux stock on these cars just doesn't cut it..for me anyway.

my rear end did that it was a combo of the rear pads dragging and the rear end gears were not properly aligned. I shimmed the rear end a little and the noise when away. This dude at the rear end shop said sometimes things move as the car gets older...the guy was really old so he must have know something lol. When I say shimmed it wasn't very much they guy said he did it like 1/1000 of an inch.
