GT2871 Oil drain and wastegate question

I've searched and read various posts on various positions of the oil drain hole on the Garrett gt2871 turbo. Most posts say to put the oil drain hole as close to the 6 o'clock position as possible or +/- 30 degrees. I've written to Garrett asking them about this and here is the email they sent me back.

There are a few key points to note above and beyond the information on the provided 468156 “TURBOCHARGER INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS” tag when installing a turbocharger.

1. The angle of the turbine inlet flange and compressor discharge is application dependant and does not affect performance. Position the housings however your heart desires keeping in mind that for internally wastegated turbochargers the compressor housing can only be rotated in increments dictated by the bolt spacing. Always ensure that the actuator rod can move freely and is not rubbing on the ID of the bracket.

Example – The compressor hsg on the 739548-5001S (GT2860RS “Disco Potato”) turbocharger has six evenly spaced bolt holes therefore it can be rotated at 60° increments.

2. Water port orientation is critical for thermal siphoning (coolant flow through the center hsg when the engine is turned off) and turbocharger durability. Rotate the center housing so that the oil drain hole is not perfectly located at the 6 o’clock position. One water port should be slightly higher than the other. Connect the water line that is at a higher level in the engine cooling system to the higher port on the center housing. Then connect the remaining water line the lower port. Having the ports at a slightly different level will allow thermal siphoning and prevent air bubbles from getting trapped in the center housing cavities.

3. The torque specs for the GT2871R are 11-14 lb/in for the compressor side bolts and 15-17 lb/in for the turbine side bolts.

I hope that this has answered your question. Thank you!

Regards,
Garrett Gearhead
I was also reading that you are susposed to flip the wastegate actuator bracket over. I have done this but now my wastegate rod appears to be too short. Is there an adapter or spacers need to make this work?

Thanks
