Is my "95" 240sx with a manafacture date of 3/94 an OBDI or OBDII ?

check the obd port under the dash on the drivers side. that will tell you for sure. Odds are its OBDI

The obd port on mine is on the passenger side below and just to the left of the glove box !!

95 i believe is obdI, II started from 96.. Not sure but it's what i've heard from others.

There is some controversy over which are OBDI and which are OBDII... I think my s14, built in 3/94 is OBDII, but I'm not sure either. It reads correctly with an OBDII code scanner, which I've been told it shouldn't if its OBDI.

1995 - OBD plug below glovebox = OBD-I
1996-98 - OBD plug located beside hood release = OBD-II

There is no other way to look at it. Build date means nothing.

They use the EVAP canister, located in the rear of the car. It's a completely different type of system, it purges and filters based on solenoid control as well as engine vacuum, and flow is dictated by fuel temperature, ambient temperature, and other factors. The basic charcoal canisters purge all the time based on vacuum only.

If the car has a charcoal canister under the hood, beside the airbox, it's OBD-I.

From an emissions enforcement and testing standpoint all 1995s are OBDI and exempt from the plugin test. It doesn't matter what the car is actually equipped with, it wasn't required for 95 model years so they wont enforce it for those model years.

From an actual functional standpoint 1995s manufactured after 9/94 use an OBDII compatible computer. the Port is still on the wrong side but you could pull the computer and put it in a 96 and pass the OBDII test... pre 9/94 ECUs are ACTUAL OBDI computers and are not emissions compatible with newer cars. I've confirmed this personally. (I own an early production 95 and was unable to get a read on an OBDII reader, I know someone running a late period 95 computer in his kouki and with no emissions testing issues)

If you're not sure check your O2 sensor... OBDI cars use a single wire... OBDII cars use 3 wires, the manufacturing date should be stamped right on the chassis info plate, or you could also cross reference the ECU label to determine what car it came from.

I'd say there is a good chance it would work in a 9/94 MFG date or newer.
before then... it would probably WORK but throw codes.

You would probably want to at least swap the MAF (I think it might be different, though I could be wrong) and O2 sensor as well.

Incorrect. The MAF is the exact same. As far as the O2, the 3wire is just a heated sensor for quicker readings, you can use an OBD-II ECU with the 1wire sensor, you'll just get a code during warmup. The only other difference is the TPS and CTS, they have different plugs but read the same.
You can also go the other way and use an OBD-I ECU in an OBD-II chassis, the 96 cars are a direct plug in, 97-98s require repinning three wires, JWT has a PDF on what's required. You'll also lose the rear O2 sensor since it's a 4wire on 97-98s unless you run an extra wire, but it's not needed anyway for engine operation.

Anything with an OBD plug, I or II, will work. The difference is the actual codes. 1995 cars used manufacturer codes only, while 1996+ they're mandated across all manufacturers. Read through the 1995 FSM, you won't have the same amount of codes, nor do the numbers all match up to 96+ codes. You can pull some codes using a OBD-II scanner on a 1995 model, but not all, and some won't match to what the actual problem is.

I'm calling my car OBDI½ lol. I was built 3/94, which should be OBDI, and yet it has a 3C OBDII ECU. I wouldn't imagine that the ECU had been swapped cause the car has a KA and OBDI harness... But then again...

I don't trust those numbers. If you have a 3C ECU all that tells me is your ECU has a big 3C on it. It's still a 1995 model.

Unplug the VSS and drive the car long enough to trip the CEL, then pull up the code. If it's code 114, it's a 1995, OBD-I. If it's a code P0500, it's OBD-II.

The ecu says CB, is that ob1 or 2?
