Manual Trans Speed Sensors S13 vs Z31 N/A
Ok guys need some help here, hopefully someone has a Z31 M/T speed sensor and could compare the bore diameter to that of the S13 M/T speed sensor.
Now your probably wondering what im trying to do, will I have a 97-01 Q45 VLSD with a 3.692 final drive which im going to install into my S13 but I want my speedo to be accurate or atleast close as possible, so after doing a little searching on Nissan FAST I was able to see that the Z31 NA M/T and S13 M/T both use the FS5W71C transmission's duh. I also know that the Z31 comes with a 3.700 final drive which is close enough for me (3.692), so i wanan get my hands on a Z31 speed sensor from a 3.700 final drive equiped FS5W71C Z31 and see if the speed sensor fits which I think it should since there both the same trannys and I have no reason to believe the casting of the rear section shoudl be different. Add some more pertinent info here for comparison sake: Z31 FS5W71C 215/60/15 Overall diameter 25.15" (638.81mm) 07/83 - 08/87 3.700 Final Drive (18T VSS) 08/87 - END 3.900 Final Drive (19T VSS) S13 FS5W71C 195/60/15 205/60/15*optional Over diameter 24.21" (614.93mm) 24.68" (626.87mm) 07/90 - END (KA24DE) 4.08 Final Drive (20T VSS) 07/88 - 07/90 (KA24E) 4.08 Final Drive (20T VSS) F/Sport Package 07/88 - 07/90 (KA24E) 4.08 Final Drive (21T VSS) Last edited by UNISA JECS; 06-26-2008 at 03:36 PM.. |

I'd bet it will fit fine, same rear case, it'd almost have to. As far as who has one, shit. I haven't seen a Z31 in a salvage yard in years.

I hope so....
I'll throw up the tooth counts on the speedos in a lil bit, I wanna see how things stack up in favor with slightly smaller rolling diameter and what not. |

Added VSS tooth counts to first post.
The Z31 also has a 17T VSS but its for a diff transmission so I dunno if it'll work so I didn;t bother posting that info. |

Will I learned today the Z31 VSS does fit but its mechanical so I guess imma try Courtesy Nissan Texas to see if they have the NISMO 17t pinion available, its shows that it is for S13 but for S14 mostly all pinions are NLA.
Also the Z31 pinion is not removable, I tryed its totally different than that of the S13 pinion. Pics: ![]() ![]() http://www.courtesyparts.com/nms/s13/s13_4.html |

How about an aftermarket speedometer? That's the only way I'm able to compensate for ring and pinion/wheel/etc. changes.
I use the GPS most of the time, and the mechanical speedo is only a backup. I have an S13 auto VSS if you want to experiment. |

the same way that people re-solder the speedo for mph on a kph cluster, you should be able to compensate yours. just food for thought if it is that important

The calibration range of the factory speedo does not accomodate what he's trying to do. You can calculate and try to adjust for something as large as the mile/km conversion, but that's beyond the stock calibration. If you have info on this mod then feel free to post a link. I was going along the route of an inline converter. The problem is that the Nissan VSS signal doesn't have an off-the-shelf converter and needs a custom unit. I ended up going with GPS and a shaft sensor into aftermarket speedo as backup. |

The closest I got was the manufacturer for SpeedoHealer. He's international but he's willing to make you one for free if you test it for him. All of them has a range of adjustment, and depending on what you're doing, it may or may not be enough. May want to let the vendor know so you have enough adjustment built in. |

Called Courtesy Nissan Texas and they said the S13 M/T speedo pinions are available at $25.00 each so I think imma end up buying both 17t and 18t pinions....

to change from Kph to MPH is out of the calibration range too. but with the added resistor it works fine. I know, I did it to my old cluster. PS. here's the link http://www.zeroyon.com/index/content/view/20/47/ |

Ok I just ordered a S13 M/T 17t and 18t speedo pinion from courtesy for ~$60 shipped because I dont know which one is gonna be best suited for the 3.69 final drive so I bought both, hopefully this is accurate enough to avoid the other options which seem like alot of work....

Also liek to add to this thread that the 18t speedo pinion gear and the 3.69 FD are a perfect match as long as yoru running a comparable to stock rolling diamater tire size.
The speedo does require re-clocking so that it meshes with the speedo pinion drive gear in the transmission though. If you look at the speedo its bolted down at the 6:00 O'clock, this needs to be reclocked to atleast 9:00 or 3:00 O'clock (which ever direction you want doesn;t matter) so that contact is made and everything works out like a charm. Would have taken pics of how I did this mod but my battery died. |
