I never paid any attention to a noise I get every morning when I wake up to turn on my car. It's just some kind of rattling noise in the engine that happens when I first start the car but then goes away in like half a sec. When I read the faqs I checked the info they had on timing chains and they said if u heard a rattling type niose then there is some prob with the tensioners and guides. Has anybody had timing chain problems? Did anybody's car ever start up with some weird rattling noise? My car has 69g miles, is it time to change it, the faq said that the timing chain never has to be changed, is that true? And if I have to change, how long can I wait?(its pretty #### expensive)
BTW, my car is a 90 240sx fastback (Edited by 240sxspeedracer1 at 10:18 pm on Nov. 22, 2001) (Edited by 240sxspeedracer1 at 10:20 pm on Nov. 22, 2001) |

Actually, the chain guides installed from the factory on both S13's and S14's are plastic and they have the tendency to start to fail and make noise at around 60-70000miles. The guides they replace them with now are metal, so they are made to last forever. I have 71000miles on my S14 and it makes all sorts of noises when it's cold, I just haven't had the time to take it to the shop and have it done (thank god for my extended warranty--it's going to cost me $100 to have my timing chain replaced <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'> )

I have read up alot on this topic and so far this is what i know my cars a 92 s13 has the same problem a rattling comeing from under the valve cover. now with s13 they put 2 timeing chain guides in. They over built the crs only one is neeeded. I have spoke to many people who hae done the following and have had no problems afterward. Get yorself a new valve cover gasket cheap lie 20 bucks. next pull the valve cover off. from what i hear yo should see that little braket everyone is talkin about sitting there it should be laying there lose rolling and rattling around. remove that little bugger and put the valve cover back on useing your new gasket. You dont always need the new gasket but you do in many cases it cheap so no big deal. From what i hear it a very simple fix. i read aolt about this on 240sx.org i will look for the info and give you the links. as soon as i stop being so #### lazy i am gona do this on my car. craig

Yea I have a 90 s13 and I had my timing chain done around 105,000 miles, then as soon as my warranty ran out at around 120,000 it is making the dam noise again. But oh well one day I will have a sr20det one day.
