Ace Hardware's Grade 10.9?
Anybody heard of Grade 10.9? Ace hardware has them, however Ive snapped 2 of them (6-8mm) already.
Im getting ready to change my engine mounts out (10*f outside) and dont want to snap the old bolts on the tranny mount. When I installed my poly tranny mount, I noticed I could torque one of the bolts on the tranny at 27lbs for about 5 turns, worries me. Is this 10.9 really SAE grade 5 or something? |

10.9 is equivalent to an SAE Grade 8. That said, most bolts at Ace Hardware are utter junk and probably aren't as strong as they're rated, or they are but are the most brittle POS around(probably what you're getting).
I wouldn't use bolts from there for anything critical. I pretty much have gotten to where I only trust bolts from McMaster-Carr due to all the counterfeit bolts out there. |

No, OEM bolts are pretty trust worthy if a little expensive.
Just to clarify, it's not that Ace has a nefarious plan to screw everyone over, but when you buy cheap bolts and mark them up 1000% you end up with "mismarked" bolts. It's actually a very widespread problem because there's big business of just stamping a bolt a higher grade than what it really is and selling it for almost double. |
