Gauge removel help needed ASAP - Zilvia.net Forums | Nissan 240SX (Silvia) and Z (Fairlady) Car Forum

The reason for my wanting to remove my gauge cluster in the first place is because my temp gauge doesn't work 95% of the time...it just sits at the bottom and bounce around when I hit bumps and what not...anyways, so I have removed the two covers on my steering colum, and the lower dash piece under the steering colum (Ie I have the plastic cover that's over top the gauges free) but between the tilt lever, and the ignition switch- I see NO WAY IN HELL of getting that frikin cover off.

This is on a 92 FB (S13) ...any help will be appriciated. It's kinda hard to drive my car with my dash in pieces

look for two BIG bolts on the bottom of your steering column. Removing those will drop the column enough for you to get the cluster out.

FYI, the faulty temp gauge is probably not related to the gauge itself. More likley the sensor needs to be replaced. Unfortunatly I can't remember for the life of me where that sensor is.

Hey thx alot for the info...

The reason I thought that it was my gauge is that it will work every once in awile...almost like when I break hard or some other jerking motion- my gauge will spring to life...but then as soon as I hit a bump or another similar motion the needle drops back down again.

Also if any1 knows where that sensor is FOXCOLT mentioned I would like to know as well.

Ok I got the gauges out easily...and yeah I'm thinkin that the gauge isn't the root of my problem. So I would still like to know where the sensor that I'm looking for is. Even knowing what it's called would be a big help.

Ok for any who's interested...

I found the coolant temp sensor (right at the front of the intake manifold)...bought a new one at ORiellys ($20) and then replaced it.

But I think my problem was actually the plug that goes onto the sensor, because it seemed to fit WAY too sloppy. My temp gauge does work now as long as I'm going under 15mph, or am braking. Which makes me think that the plug just doesn't seat right onto the sensor. So I'm gonna try and find a 240 in the junkyards around here and splice in a new plug- or just buy a new one.

Or, there is the alternative... Dump the 'restore the faulty stock gauge' and start your way down the aftermarket gauge road.. getting a splice for your coolant line, running the lead from it, through the firewall to a sexy Greddy or Defi temperature gauge...

More often than not, a lot more precise and reliable... My water temp gauge hasn't worked right since I swapped my engine in and all it does is tap on the resting needle. Unless I boost hard and then it thinks it's a boost gauge for some reason however I am taking that out of the dash this weekend. 'Getting tired of the tapping noise from the dash.'
