Help me pick best Daily/Uber car!

Hey guys,

Been doing some thinking recently. The office I work at is about 35-40 miles from my house. That being said I have been putting a lot of miles on my recently acquired 97 240 that I daily drive. While looking for a second source of income I have people telling me I should uber when not at the office. Sounds like a pretty good idea but the 240 doesn't qualify and I deff wouldn't put it through that much abuse.

This got me thinking that I can solve two problems at once. Buy a cheap 2005+ car to uber and daily drive to the office. I would be able to tax write off all gas/maintenance expenses. Looking on craigslist I was pretty surprised at the amount of newerish cars in the 4-5k price range. I actually had my sights set on an 05+ maxima/Altima but have been reading a lot of bad reviews of motor/trans issues.

Pretty much looking for the most reliable 05+ 4-door car under 5k. Figured a lot of guys on here have dailys that may fit my criteria so looking for feedback on these types of cars. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

Thanks

Double check the Uber site i think they changed it to 2000+ 4 doors. I drive for Uber+ in an 05 Expedition. But if i could I would pick up like an 03-05 WRX for a double purpose, an extra toy + weekend worker.

You have a 240 for a weekend toy car. You don't need another toy, so forget IS300, WRX, G35 Sedan, any BMW, etc. For a dedicated people mover, look at the typical popular choices and pick the most reliable one you can afford: Prius, Corolla, Civic, Versa, Mazda 3, etc. You should pay close attention to MPG/fuel consumption as this WILL certainly eat into your profits. I had a friend who did this to pay for his school. Worked on great for him. Good luck, man.

Good luck getting insured by an auto insurance carrier after you become a driver.

Thanks for the replys. Your insurance can really drop you for ubering part time? I already have state farm for the 240 and a pretty good relationship with my agent.

lol yeah you deff can't buy an expensive car and think to make a profit. @4-5k I can't really lose because I will be whoring it out during the week anyways to and from the office. At night time I can just uber around the local bars and hope for some nice non-pukeing clients haha

i've driven for both uber and lyft. uber is 2005+ (unless they changed it in the last 6 months) and lyft is 2000+.

i was looking for the same fun/decent gas mileage/4 door for daily and part time uber/lyft. for me it was pretty much between g35, g37, is300, is250, and gs350. g35 and is300 are generally more within your budget and cost less to maintain. idk how it is over there, but here like 80% of the is300's i've come across are salvaged title so that really took them out of the running. my lyft mentor (when you get approved by lyft you have to meet up with a "mentor" to make sure your car and your driving is safe before you can start driving for them) actually drove a g35 and said he'd put around 100k on it and only had to do fluids and tires. i had a z33 for a couple of years and drifted it and pretty much had the same experience. not to mention the vq35 was nissan's mostly widely used motor so even if anything did go wrong, parts are super abundant. tbh if i wasn't an idiot that's what i would have gotten, but i made the mistake of tracking down a manual is250 with seat coolers and was sold lol.

good luck btw. you gotta be willing to give up your social life if you want to make the big bucks doing ride share haha

Holy Hell. Just went looking at Prius prices in my area for shits & giggles... a 2005 can be had for $5k or less. That's the car for you: 4 doors and it sips gas, so it will be maximum profit. Plus there is a SEA OF THEM!!! This should be a no brainer. Thinking of doing this myself now...

Edit: Wow. Civic Hydrid is about the same price & better looking. Nice.

VW/Audi TDI. Should be real cheap with all the chicken little's freaking out about their cars being legal.

2nd choice would be a Camry. 4cyl Manual.

VW/Audi TDI's are going to be the current steal of the century! Buy a late model low mileage car for cheap. Hell my friend who owns a regular VW got chastised by some far left liberal yahoo for driving it! The dumbass ( windmill lefty giving him a hard time) did not even realize it was the 4 cylinder gas model. Lol
