s14 distributor help

I'm installing my distributor in my car. It's a s14 with a ka in it. I set the motor to TDC and line the marks up on the distributor and put it inbut it doesn't go in all the unless I rotate the motor as I push it in. I was just wondering if that's normal or not

It will turn slightly as you insert it because it's driven off a helical cut gear on the idler sprocket.

1. Before removing distributor, mark position of rotor on distributor housing and mark where the 10 mm bolt is in the slot. More importantly, also mark position of rotor after you remove distributor as rotor rotates as you remove it. The last mark is where the rotor should line up before you slide distributor back in. You might have to twist dist slightly to get it out and in. So, there are 3 reference marks to make. Make sure to number your ignition wires with silver sharpie at both ends.

Im going through the same thing right now.

I just changed my head gasket and now the distributor wont go back in.

Im trying to figure it out too... all I can think of is that some how the front cover got warped or the idle sprocket got misalligned somehow. Im about to bookmark this thread. If you find out anything please let me know.

As devnull stated it's "helical cut gear". Make sure your on TDC on power and not on intake. Then make sure your rotor points to number 1 cylinder. Don't need to turn the crank when your already on TDC. You can wiggle the rotor left and right and should slide right in.
