Check your states law.

As I know it:

"No person under the age of 18 years old can enter into a legal binding contract"

In the case of car ownership, I know of at least 3 legal binding contracts...which all of them really is an oxymoron...

1. Drivers Liscence. It is a contract with the state and literally all states and the globe that you will abide by all traffic laws and have legal registration and proof of insurance to operate a motor vehicle legally.

2 Car registration. Legal binding contract of automobile liscensing with the state and is good for any state in the USA to legally use that automobile on public paid streets. This also includes Canada and Mexico border crossings.

3. Drivers insurance. Must have at least personal injury protection and Liability insurance to get a registration on said vehicle. Varys with state. Up to 1999, Alabama required no insurance at all. I think their may be a few states that do not.

Based on this being legal binding contracts and that anyone under 18 years old cannot enter into a legal binding contract (you can marry at 14 in Mississippi which is another legal binding contract) SO....as all this is mentioned by me, I feel you can buy a car, own a car, insure a car and register a car and be violating the law of the legal binding contract and still be LEGAL!

It is a wierd set of circumstances...indeed.

Per the california DMV....

Quote:
Can I register a vehicle if I'm a minor and do not possess a driver's license?

Yes, California law does not require a driver license to register a vehicle in your name. However, all registration requirements such as proof of insurance, smog inspection, etc., are required. And of course, it is not legal for you to drive the vehicle until you are a licensed driver.
