buy a $500 torque plate or not?

I am building my sr20det with 86.5mm bore and 9:1 compression cp pistons. i am at the stage where the machine shop is about to start work and am wondering if i should be buying a torque plate? my understanding of this plate is that it is to compress the block as if the head were bolted on which causes the aluminum to squish a little and the cylinders to swell in a little. mazworx uses these while boring the cylinders and you are supposed to use one while grinding the piston rings.

do i NEED this tool? or are people building motors without it?

Ask your machine shop.

When I had my engine machined I just dropped it off with them and they took care of it, been 4 years since without a problem

If you want to do it right, using a torque plate is a good idea. Stops any 'ovaling' of the block while they're boring. I wouldn't suggest buying one, I'd suggest sending your block to someone that deals with SR's frequently (like Mazworx, etc) who has one. Much cheaper.

With such a small 'overbore' you'll probably be fine on a stret based car. As Jordan says above, you'd be best off either shipping to an SR specialist, or renting one from one that does have one.
