oh and this
Before importing a vehicle, ask your DMV about state-specific requirements, including emissions, temporary plates or special documentation from customs. Make sure your sales contract verifies that the car has been built to U.S. standards. The manufacturer's certification label is attached to the vehicle (near the driver's door). Before exporting your car, steam or thoroughly clean it to remove foreign soil (particularly on tires and the undercarriage). The U.S. Department of Agriculture doesn't want harmful pests sailing over with your car. Show the U.S. Customs Service the shipper's original bill of lading, your bill of sale, foreign registration, and whatever vehicle documents you have, including original certificate of title or a certified copy of the original. Complete the EPA's Form 3520-1 and the DOT's Form HS-7. Vehicles meeting U.S. emission requirements carry a manufacturer's label (in English) certifying this, in the engine compartment. 6 Verify that you need to pay duty on imported, foreign-made vehicles; generally, you do. You may be able to apply your $400 customs exemption (and accompanying family members' exemptions) toward its value. But be prepared: If your car's combined fuel-economy rating is under 22.5 miles per gallon--you might pay a gas-guzzler tax. Get more information from the following sources: Environmental Protection Agency (epa.gov); Department of Transportation Office of Vehicle Safety Compliance NHTSA (nhtsa.gov); U.S. Customs Service (www.customs.ustreas.gov). |

interesting. we have a client at my work who is living in Hungary and supposedly bought a BMW in the US. We suspect that he is planning to import it over there. My boss says "it used to be people would buy a car in Europe and take a vacation out there and drive it while on vacation, then ship it back to the US as a used car. they pay lower fees/taxes on certain things as a used car" it's definitely possible.

^ BMWs are pretty chill. if you go there to get one you get to test drive it on their track, the exact one they will ship back. i believe they switch out the cluster for a usdm one with MPH and a few other little things.

Do you have pics of the s14, or are you still looking? EU s14's are sweet, vvt sr20det's and some limited edition s14's were only sold in Germany, the sportline, racing and z-edition. Good luck importing it back to the US!

Most folks who ship their cars from Germany, who are military, are buying US Spec cars. If its not US Spec, dont expect TMO to ship it for free. Wont happen...you'd probably have a better chance of renting a container, stripping the car, and ship everything back in it as a "parts car." Still sketchy as hell, customs could always pinch it at port and you'd be assed out.

In addition to checking your jurisdictional requirements to import the car one area where people who import vehicles neglect is insurance. Make sure at all three points is covered by insurance (origin, shipping, final location). Find out if your german insurance covers the trip over, if it doesn't you might have to get insurance ahead of time in your state so it is ready.
