light sound deadening is more or less a catch22. if you want sound deadening, it requires adding some material thickness (tar/rubber) or insulation.

Like Mike noted, good sound deadening is going to be heavier than crappy sound deadening. It's just how it works... more mass, less resonation.

I have carried all of the big name brands of sound deadening at some point or another in the last 19 years. So far I prefer Second Skin the best. Their Damplifier Pro is a tad thicker than the Dynamat extreme... and it's anodized black. Which is very helpful in the car audio world where you can see through the OEM speaker grill. Otherwise you see all of this shiny silver sound deadening. I don't have to paint it or cover it with close cell foam just to hide the silver.

Check them out and let me know if you need any pricing:

i tried sound deadening years ago and i felt that it was the biggest waste of time. in hot weather, shit runs since its tar based and makes a mess. the foil gets scratched and then you have tar everywhere. its like tar and feathering your car, its horrible.

nowadays, if im going to do any sound deadening i will look for something that bonds and cures, similar to an undercoating. i will also rely on insulation to help cancel the unwanted noise.

Don't be a pussy and just embrace the noise. Rattles are character traits. If you're doing this for your sound system, just turn up the volume. I know this because I am an expert, you can trust me.

That old crap was tar based, as I'm sure some of the cheap crap is today. Newer sound deadening like the Second Skin Damplifier line and the Dynamat Extreme are all butyle rubber. They will never sag even on a vertical surface and are good up to 300 degrees believe it or not.

I'm also thinking about this..
How about that unbranded dynamat stuff (insulation)??

Reccomendations, best bang for buck?

Anyone ever heard of the quiet car paint? I'm thinking of spraying a few coats, 1. I could easily paint over it and 2. I could spray it in every nook and cranny of the car/panels. I am just hesitant on whether or not it works.

Sorry my build thread isn't good enough for chat yet, but I'm in the middle of doing this. After one more week I will be able to give you actually weights of all the factory sound deadening, and the weight of the dynamat and dynapad that will be back in the car. It was also painted with a Rust Bullet, which should help with sound, as well as a Durabak bedliner and stay quiet paint. Here is the progress so far.
