yes, kaaz (i will only speak of this cause it's what i have) is the center section only..you crack open your stock, no-vlsd, differential and replace all the interior pieces, gears, etc with what was provided to you by kaaz..

just simple remove and replace..that is all..

rather easy..just time consuming and lots of sweat from wrenching on 100+ ft/tq'd bolts..

Did you need any specal tools? I really want to do this operation myself to save $$$ but am worried that I won't know what I am doing once I get in there. I can't afford to have my car down for more than a day.
Any advice?

Leave it to the pro's if you dont have any experience with this. If you take the pumpkin out yourself and take it to a shop...you save some money there. It'll usually run $150-200 for install. IMO, if you dont know what your doing, its not going to be worth the pains and troubles to learn ESPECIALLY if you cant afford the car to be down for more than a day!

don't you need new oupput shafts as well? cause you have an open diff and changing it to a LSD with both tires getting traction at the same time wouldn't you need 2 new output shafts. i believe they have to be the same ones to like 2 right side output shafts or something...dunno anyways why dont you do a parts search on carparts.com and find yourself a infinity J30 VLSD they bolt right on an S14 with now other mods.

There are lsds made that don't need new output shafts. Kazz and Tomei both make such a unit.
Aside from that, a VLSD and a clutch or mechanical type are in diffrent performance leauges entirely. Upgrading to a clutch or mechanical diff is a serious performance modification, when installing a viscous is mearly an improvement over the open diff.
