s13 rear end issues?

So I'm out at the local spot tonight and I start to hear a howling noise. Its only when I'm on the gas though. I drive around for a bit then head home. I notice on the way home the noise gets higher in pitch and louder the faster I go. I'm thinking rear end bearings might be shot. Anybody ever succesfully replaced there's and if so how hard is it? Is it something being a shadetree mechanic I can do myself or should I take it to a shop. I'm already LSD so its not like I can really do any better. I'm going to take a close look tomorrow. I'm really really really hoping its just a wheel bearing. any ideas people. does this sound like a rear end to you? also I just put in a clutch, as in tonight was the first time back on the road. So i'm also thinking the bracket for the intermediate shaft might not be on right or maybe propellor shaft bearing. any input is appreciated.

well mine is definitely the rear end. this is not a common issue at all in the 240sx. I am thinking mine was spawned by the 4puck unsprung clutch I run in it. Drain your gear lube, and if there is metal shavings on the magnet on the drain plug, more than just a few, like mine was a good 1/16" of an inch, then you need a rear, be warned though its a bitch to refill that. the fill plug is on drivers side, its a half-inch ratchet head sized plug.

ok if you have a pump it is easy, I will say that, but when you are laying on garage floor with a hose connected to the bottle then its a pain in the ass that takes forever, its takes a lot of pressure to squeeze that gear lube through a 3/8" hose thats a foot long
my trick was to remove the wheel, and you can kind of wiggle the gear lube bottle up between the frame and the diff.

invest in a pump. cheap ones are 10 dollars or so. its nothing. seriously by the time i jack up car, drain, refill and lower its about 1/2 hour

on a lift..even easier.
