Getting closer on my LS1 project's body work, time to address the fender wells and tranny tunnel, etc.

Is there any consensus on what is the best of the best for undercoating? I've seen the junk in the cans at the store but I hardly think it would compare to the great sticky stuff the OEM uses. I've actually read some good things about using truck bed liner but with it usually being so hard I don't think it would have any sound deadening effect at all which might suck for street car.

Anybody come across an OEM equivalent for undercoating?

expand your search to include the rest of the internet, specifically the rat/hotrod guys. i bet the stuff gets used more in their communities as opposed to ours (since theres so many of them)

Well what is your main objective. Is it to sound proof it more or rust protective or just rubberize the underbody.

I like to por 15 the entire underbody to protect from rust then i use 3m schultz/ rubberized coating for extra protection from debris.

I have heard of good things with lizard skin i believe.

Many of myself and many others use this. Bed liner is really thick and doesn't really go on as nice as 3M.

How many cans of the 3m stuff would you use to cover the undercarriage and fenders on an S14? I am looking at this stuff now and from a chemical standpoint it makes sense why this stuff works. It was engineered nicely.

2 cans should do an entire undercarriage nicely. i used 3, possibly 4

Use the POR15 before bedliner/3M to make sure that thing will never rust. Used on on my 240Z's.

Whats the best method for applying the POR15 to the bottom on the car? Just want to make sure that I apply this stuff correctly. I think my uncle has a container of that stuff sitting around.

there are 2 types, paintable and non paintable. i used the paintable type.

i like having extra cans at my garage in case i need to touch-up my car, or any of my cars, customers car... etc. so, you really cant go wrong by having an extra can.

Not trying to butt in but is there local parts stores that carry POR15? Or is the best way to get a hold of it to order it off the internet? I know i haven't seen it in Autozone, or advance or anything like that. I haven't tried napa or carquest yet. Would paint suppliers stock this maybe?

this is true I myself did the Herculiner bed liner on my s13 went on nice and thick but after a year it turned in to rubber and started pealing in chunks

People who want to use por-15 please read up on it since you need to do prep work if u want it done correctly and also don't get it on you or it will last for 2 weeks atleast.

I think the cheapest place to get it from was summit

I can second using POR-15 also... We have cans of it laying in the shop my dad uses on customers cars. It is some incredibly good stuff! A little pricey, but worth it. And definetly do not get it on you... haha

Your local auto body supply store should carry it or be able to get it. The sherwin williams automotive store here carries it on shelf

my whole family (alot of rat rodders) use a product called

RusFree

I just did my G with it & love it..

it will stay tacky for about a week as it creeps into all the little nooks.

it also have a fibers & rust inhibitors in it.

my uncle has a old 30's roadster rat that he built like 15 years ago & was done with the Rusfree stuff & not 1 sign of rust.

also DONT use the areosol shit....use a brush on, that way you can build it up to your desired level

I used a brand called EFTEC. It is what Nissan is currently applying to cars. The distributor is in Michigan IIRC. I used a paint brush to apply it.
