have you picked up your latest grm magazine?

GRM magazine has good article about drifting for 2 issues in a row. Grass Roots Magazine covers all types of motorsports and has been following SCCA sanctioned events. Recently they have covered drifting 2x in a row.... good article about drifting.

Yeah, I read that.. Good article. Didn't appear to be written by a GRM staffer though (generally they are very opinionated)? Seemed very positive for the sport.

i dont have a problem with drifting... well i dont like it, but its besides the point.

Point is, drifting is not a sport. Its a show. Performance is not measured in units but somebody else judging how u did. That's not a sport.

Now a motorsports magazine publishing an article about drifting and calling it a motorsport tells me only one thing: sellouts.

Even rally, which is full of being able to control w/o having grip, is way more of a motorsport than drifting, as you are actually trying to be faster then everybody else, unlike drifting, where u trying not to hit a cone while pulling off a mad phat drift..... pffft.

whatever. drifting is not a sport. period. u know it. Whatever your definition is, is not the definition that the rest of the world lives buy.

I'll give u an analogy. Its called american metal. Limp Bizkit, Korn all the other shit out there. Americans call it metal. Rest of the world calls it crap. same with drifting (although maybe ppl dont call it crap lol but u get my point).

what a bunch of dumbasses, of course its a form of motorsports, you don't have to have a quantative method of measuring performance to declare something a motorsport. Its a competition between cars, something people build cars for and practice for. It has its own events and sponsors.

true. i was waiting for someone to bring that up actually.

But, its pretty much the only sport out there that has the judging system (well boxing too) and if u look around, you'll see that there are alot of people that actually argue that point. Seriously, all it is, is dancing on the ice. Do you consider dancing a sport?

umm do u do that cuz u dont actually have anything to say as an argument? pity

Alright, tell me whats drifting is about. From what i've seen/heard, you get the tail out, whoever keeps it longer/steadier or what not (basicly whoever does it "nicer") wins. True?

Now figure skating has a bunch of routines u have to do. Like double, triple jumps etc. There is a measuring system for ya. You either do them clean, or you dont. You either get a point or u do not.

Boxing is also judged based on the number of punches u give and how clean they are. Not to mention knockouts which are a clear proof of victory.

Is all that done in drifting? Or is it just one single routine done over and over again and judged on whoever gets it better?

nah, nothing at all like that
well...at the beginning learning YES--staying sideways

but at a higher level, definately not

to me..this is how it is judged. my perception of it and personal expirience from the various competitions ive done.

drifting is judged on first and foremost:

LINES
what kind of lines? racing lines.
[entry] speed--anyone can gun it out of a corner, but coming in fast, setting up the car and maintaining a proper line is not easy.
overall car control--how you set the car up sideways before/during/exiting the corner/corners
angle--this is questionable, but imho its important.
consistency--anyone can get lucky and nail something one time. takes real skilll to do it over and over. just like it is important in any form of racing.
corner connection--how you changed directions throughout a course layout.

edit: 99% of the tiem the people who rag on drifting and all are the ones who have NEVER done it.

when you do actually try it, you'd understand. and might not be first time. but overtime..you'll really open your eyes and say WOAH no wonder people love doing this. you cant get taht feeling in much else. you dont have to be 'the best' you dont have to be national champ or have a billion sponsors to have fun. just do it.

and 95% of the drifters out there are teh coolest people you could possibly meet. never at any sort of competition environment will you meet such friendly folks. espeically when there are big prizes and sponsors and money waiting for the winners. most people at these events are friends and help eachother out. doesnt matter if they are competing against you.

judging drifting is hard because it is subjective... in japan it' has a lot to do with the culture because of the well respected judges that they have become from past motorsports championships. the culture is different... and yes, drifting is considered a major motorsports in japan.

however, in the US it's different because being subjective is an opinion of someone. where most american would like to question or argue on, smiply because americans like to debate, discuss and argue on almost about anything they can talk about. unless, the judges happens to be michael schumacher, mario andretti or someone of that status. where an average joe would have a hard time arguing their opinion.

drifting is scored by racing line, accuracy, consistency, speed and angle. it is hard to maintain the speed while you worry about your accuracy, angle and racing line at the same time. i think they also judge the general presentation.

the higher speed and angle you have the harder it is to control because by having a high angle means you are about to spin out because you're on the edge of your lateraly movement. any angle after that would be a spin out.

does that make sense? if not... oh well. it's still fun...

hah right.

u still only doing one routine. You just broke it up into many parts. basicly how to position yourelf for a jump in order to make it higher.

as for ragging, im not. it is probably a lot of fun but so are million other things. And if you people are into it, do it as much as u want to. Just dont call it motorsports. Just like with my music example. Make the music, just dont call it metal.

And yes, ive never tried it, and i dont want to. and yeah, there is something u get that feeling in. Actually even more of it cuz it gives u the adrenaline rush of a rather real possibility of crashing into a tree and dying... Its called rally. I'm doing rally-x (hopefully club rally too next year if i get a another car) and to me its way more fun than drifting will ever be.... Not to mention its much more fun to watch...

And before ppl tell me that its only my opinion: http://maddox.xmission.com/opinion1.gif

anyways, my boring day of work is over so i'm leaving this hehe

hahaa you crack me up
dont knock it till you try it!
yeah rally-x could be more fun then drifting but you wouldnt know, you are happy with what you are doing.

which is a-ok

you could having sex with 18 year old models, but you wouldnt know because doing it with your 80 old grandmas is the best that you know of. and your happy doing it! that's a-ok!

as far as crashing, have you seen crashing in drifting? hahaha
soem folks eat trees too. some eat barriers, both have the high risk (rally and drifting)...so both are closer then you might think (risk/adrenaline wise).

HMMM
