Disposing of totaled car?

So I'm curious as how some of you cats go about disposing of your shells once you've stripped them. My situation is somewhat unique as I hit a guardrail (not anyone else) and I did not report it to my insurance or whatever (I don't have full coverage)

Cutting it up with a sawzall (a la Mr. metabolism) is possible but I'd rather not since the garage its gonna be in is small and there are worries of starting a fire or whatever...

I don't think any local junkyards will take it (and there are few; I am in San Francisco) since its going to basically be a completely stripped shell. The only things that will be left will be wheels and the shell itself :P

So I am trying to figure this one out. Anyone have any ideas?

Also what about dealing with the DMV and whatnot? I'm going to get a registration renewal for an essentially dead car in about 6 mos. Do I just call them and tell them the car got owned and that I dumped it?

TIA for any info/hints.

You report that it was an accident towards an object, ie your guardrail, so you don't have to register again. as for the dumping... i don't see why yards wouldn't take it iff the motor and things are still in

well, when I needed to dispose of a car, I took advantage of a couple things. Namely the fact that in the army, my cousin handles heavy artillery, and the fact that my best friend has a giant farm in the middle of nowhere.

there aren't many things more fun than shooting an automatic grenade launcher at a car

dont ask how he got the gun off base.

in Santa Cruz we have pretty large dump which will accept scrap metal...but you'd have to cut it up i'm sure...that's what i plan to do anyway..

although i'm uncertain as to how the insurance company will go about it with mine...i mean after i take all the aftermarket stuff off it wont exactly be drivable/towable...but when they total your car out they, in a sense, purchase it from you...so i dunno what is going to happen...

good luck with yours..

hey... it could work

there are plenty of yards that will take a car off your hands for a nomimal fee. Hit the yellow pages and start calling.

AND THERE ARE NO YARDS IN SF!

yo art.. theres a scrap metal yard on Evans.. i think its called Circosta (sp?) or something like that.. that's where I junked my front clip. I saw a couple of fucked up cars over there being junked, but I think it has to be stripped out pretty good.. no glass, plastics, oil, etc.. they even pay you for the metal you bring to them! heh..

If your car is still rolling on four inflated tires, you can donate the car and get a tax deduction. If your car is stripped, the junkyard will probably not give you money for it. I totaled my s14 and stripped it. No junkyard would pay for it. You can also call a tow truck and they'll junk it for you.

The donation places will take a stripped car with a fatdent in the side that makes it look like an accordion? if so i am in.

As far as the tow truck goes... will they charge me to dump the car? Or just charge me the tow fees?

Thanks all

I totally agree, just take off the plates and destroy anything that resembles a vin #. And make a movie about racing *wink, wink, nudge, nudge* and film a scene where a shell flys off the side of a large mountain

I have some friends that when they wreck their cars they just call city tow and they take the cars from their hands. I dont know about stripped cars however, doesn't mean you can't see and find out if they would or not.

dude, just cut it up. take everything off that is worth selling, take out all the interior, all the suspension and strip eveyrthing possible. You will learn alot about the car in the process also. then just take out your sawzall and start cutting it up. get a couple friends to help you out. it will actually be fun at least i think it is when i have done it in the past.

I believe the tow truck only charges a tow fee. Give a tow truck company a call and see what they say. Try this number, (415)822-8682. It's Nelson's A Towing in S.F.

As for donation, I called a few places when I needed to desperately get rid of my s14, and they say that all the car needs is four inflated tires. Unfortunately, mines wasn't so I had to tow it.
