jic tie rod's

alrighty.... I picked up a set of jic tie rod's a while back... i recently installed them approx 2 months or so ago...
i also install kazama tie rod's along with these bad boi's

first driving impressions are
#1 great deal of extra turn in
i am able to do alot of stuff i normally couldnt do...
#2 drifting is great due to more steering angle...

the bad thing i noticed is that
#1 the tie rod end now bangs the front lca badly and i don't like that part...
#2 turning the wheel the other way (oppositie of the tie rod portion) the spring / shock combo (nismo shocks/tein springs) will actually get stuck in the shock well..

and... to top it all off...
during dd 9 in vegas
my car broke its tie rod..
i did not hit anything and it was mid drift
when all of a sudden my tie rod rips out of the steering rack...
i call up jic and they blame it on improper installation, BS!!!!!!

they cant do shit for me cuz i drift... so basically i am screwed now... and it blows! i need to get a new rack and another tie rod...
oiiii!
here are some pics that i have enclosed...

did you use thread lock on it? it doesnt look like it. yeah that would be improper installation.

looks like it came a bit loose and got stripped or something. i dont know why your stuff got stuck too at counter or rubbed. weirdness. my teins never do that

sucks man, sorry to hear.
btw, good to see you moved out west!

bah... Thread lock can suck my *****... if it was properly tq'ed it shouldnt of came out supposedly.. also, the jic's seem to have a lot of steering angle compared to the tein's
and the teins quality at first wasnt that bad..
but now that i've invested in jic and kazama tie rod n ends... i am almost forced to go jic unless i can go with uras if they make them...
and auto rnd is a wholesaler/shop/etc... we just about do it all...
and yes dousan i am finally on the west coast...
hopefully i can get some drift time...
but apparently my car is non stop down...

smart guy,

if you installed aftermarket Tie rods, you'd find out what part of that diagram you cant use..and its important!

THE LOCK PLATE

that's why you MUST use thread lock. if you dont, then you have no excuse for destroying the tie rods. there's a reason URAS gives you locktite when you buy their tie rods (i'm told)

i think the TEIN manual mentions it..not sure about JIC, i can check my friendsnext time...

Ard- Sorry about your luck with the failed parts. Hit up a junkyard and you should be able to replace the steering rack.

Dousan- Does the Moog (s14) inner tie rods use that locking plate? I know Moog isnt OEM, but I was under the assumption they are OEM replacements. If yes, are those OEM plate locks reusable?

thanks,

-m

I installed the Tein tie rods and I used the spacer instead of the lock plate. I read the instructions that came with the inner tie rods and Tein illustrated that either the spacer or lock plates could be used.

I posted that picture just to illustrate the importance of thread lock.

Aaron, what's your problem? Your reputation on this board as a smart-ass sarcastic dickhead is really beginning to piss me off.

It's better to just get new OEM locking plates, but I believe MOOG includes them w/ the inner tie rods. I know Tein doesn't. Those lock plates are like cotter pins, you could reuse it, but it'll be easier to just get new ones.

I'm thinking it was a improper install. You might have don't something wrong and not known it. And yeah you should have used thread locker, you even have to use it on the oem tie rods. Good luck with replacing the the assy. though. Sucks that that happened.

Sorry to bring up an older post but I will be doing my tein tie rods sometime soon. In the tein manual, it says that you CAN use the spacer but might rub depending on ride height/wheel size/offset/etc. Im assuming it will rub if its LOW, but im not sure what offsets and width and tire size will work w/o rubbing. If not I can always switch back to the lock plate. Will it increase steering angle with the lock plate? Im assuming it will since thats the purpose besides being stronger. This is for a s14 btw.

It will rub depending on the offset and size of your wheel. The lower the offset, the better chance that you car won't rub the inner well. You can always just hammer that piece flat so your tires don't rub.

If you don't use the spacer, you should use the lockplate and your car's turning radius will be the same. The spacer is what makes the turning radius more. Take a look at your steering rack and tie rod. The reason why your rack can't turn anymore is because the inner tie rod hits the rack. When you add that spacer, it allows the spacer to enter the rack slightly and it takes about 1/2" more for the inner tie rod to strike the rack. The spacers effectively lengthen your steering rack.

When you install them with the spacers, take into consideration the extra length of the spacers and make the tie rod shorter or else you will be toed in like mad on both sides.

The back inside part of your front tire rubs on the inner fender well. I don't have nice low offset rims so I don't know if it rubs on the outer fender or anywhere else but I don't think it should.

If your car is low enough, your wheels are wide enough, and you are going fast enough, the tire will rub the fender. The result will be a plume of smoke (liquifid rubber) which will turn into solidified bits once it cools. This is my outside tire rubbing my fender under compression while drifting...

You shoudl have gotten S14 JIC rods and S14 Kazama endlinks. They are thicker (thus beefier) than S13 ones. Whats the good of a big thick tie rod if it still has to taper down to the size of the S13 threads? Luckily Tein knows this so they only make S14 sizes.

What wheel size are you running in that pic? Stock fenders right? Rolled? Just curious.

i THINK he still had the 5mm spacers on too, so might have been 9" +10

I rolled his fenders. perfect. haha

....and they still rubbed?! j/k maybe w/o the 5mm spacers they might not have rubbed...

I have 17x8 +25 and its pretty low...fenders arent rolled yet but maybe I have a chance...but im lowering my car a little more so its...almost tucked. Im not sure if s13's have the wire harness under the left fender but on the s14, its there. Did anyone relocate it? My friend relocated his under his engine bay so it wont rub his tire......

edit: they already rub a bit if i go sorta fast into a parking spot and braking. ugh...so much trouble

Its not rubbing going in a straight line... its rubbing when the wheel is turned (because the tire sticks out so much at full counter).

BTW, my wheels are 27.5mm further out torads the fender than yours (17x8 +25 vs 17x9 +10). That is more than an inch...
