ok im considering the purchase of one 1987 200sx SE hatch (the silvia s12/gazelle, for those of you who dont know). ill fill you guys in...in 87-88, for some reason (God knows why) nissan decided to sell an SE version of the 200sx, which included the vg30e engine out of the N/A Z31, as well as its transmission and rear end, and included 5 lug wheels. this was ONLY sold in the US (not in australia, japan, or anywhere else in north america). anyways, i have some questions relating to the N/A Z31, since the engine bay and all the hardware and mounts are the same as this car

1. can you transplant the turbo and manifolds and piping from a vg30et onto an N/A Z31
2. is the transmission the same as the turbo Z31, and how much abuse will it take
3. what kind of rear end would be on the N/A Z31 (I would assume r200 VLSD?)
4. is the vg30dett a direct swap into a z31 (and how much work is required)
5. is a DOHC head transplant a possibility, better yet, feasible
6. how much HP can you get ouf of a vg30e without internals and headwork (just the basic boltons)
7. how much hp can you get out of a vg30et without cracking the sucker open

i know we have some guys on here that are very knowledgeable about turbo z31's, as well as N/A z31's, so please, someone help me out here

I could also use a little more general info on the 84-88 200sx/Silvia S12/Gazelle, as information seems somewhat hard to come by

thanks for your time

I don't think United States got the S12... And other then the fact that they existed, I have no idea about them.

1. can you transplant the turbo and manifolds and piping from a vg30et onto an N/A Z31

My A: Yes it would be the same as transplanting it into a N/A Z you would be better off putting a whole new VG30ET in there then adding the turbo parts to your n/a engine. A VG30ET can be bought for not much money.

2. is the transmission the same as the turbo Z31, and how much abuse will it take

My A:Most likely came with the T5 tranny which could handle a resonable amount of torque. I know Z32 tranny's have been hooked up to Z31's before.

3. what kind of rear end would be on the N/A Z31 (I would assume r200 VLSD?)

My A:I'm horrible in remembering LSD names, If i remeber right the LSD off the 88' AE 300ZX is the most desirable.

4. is the vg30dett a direct swap into a z31 (and how much work is required)

My A: It would be hard as ####!!!!! Really hard!!!!!!

5. is a DOHC head transplant a possibility, better yet, feasible

My A: Nope, i don't see that happening nor is it feasible.

6. how much HP can you get ouf of a vg30e without internals and headwork (just the basic boltons)

My A: 200HP no nitrous.

7. how much hp can you get out of a vg30et without cracking the sucker open

My A: Good question I have heard of alot of power coming out of them I would say over 300 HP but don't quote me.

For some more answers on the VG30E(T) try www.zcar.com the 84-89 forum obviously. IMHO the S12 is Ugly as all #### you would be better off starting with a Z31 turbo to begin with.

thanks alot ca18guy

on the subjects of looks, you dont think this looks fresh? it looks like a hachi on steroids. the one im looking at has a stock spoiler and a vented hood like the turbo models (though i think its to clear the vg30e, not sure)

WELL ca18guy, is pretty much correct.  S12 with the VG30E, first the good news, it is cheaper to put in a Z32 VG30DETT, than the DOHC coverion, however mounting the Turbos and intercoolers is the only real problem, but you have a large area to work with.

I can tell you how we are going to install the VH45DE, with twin turbos and NOS, and give you the diagrams as they come available, as it is we are still working on them, but general rule is to mount the engine as close to the firewall as physically possiable, then as you will find that the space in the front of the engine will be used for the Turbos(good thing they're small), and them move the radiator(Which is Custom) to the other of the mounting.................... Anyway I'll send you the infomation to your e-mail address ASAP, cheers.

Later from
Matt the mad Arse Kiwi.

well thanks alot, im still not sure if im buying it or not but i am leaning towards it right now, weighing my options alot. im being told that the engine bay of the s12 is pretty cramped. fitting a dett is a definite possibility, but it might mean some strut tower crunching. also hearing that vg30et is the best option, cause it'll be a bit easier, and of course the junkyard availability and cost. yeah i'm also getting told that 200-220 is the most ill get to the wheels with boltons and some home done porting work. maybe do an n2o setup but thats not really a priority. i think i'd be happy with 200 and whatever torque that'll give me.

thanks again for the help guys

Well it's not as cramped as people make it out be.

I really love the look of that car, but the USDM version has a nasty looking hood scoop.
