Short Rads and AC condenser setups with modded sr20det

How about shorter Radiator and A/C condenser used with modded sr20det - does it overheat, is it safe at all?

There is many cars like Nissans 240z or 510 that use smaller radiators with sr20det but it appears that all of them are more for show than dd/weekend track fun cars.



The idea is to have as straight/short intercooler pipes as possible that go around radiator and a/c condenser in stock location on s13 with fully functional lights. PBM mid-mount solution is not good enough here - sorry !!!
I'm sure many of you have tried or have similar setup to these, is it good enough for 300+hp s13 pushed hard occasionally?

I'm looking to adapt smaller a/c setup from another car, buy matching aftermarket radiator for it and use all that on s13 with mid mount intercooler.

Post pics and details of such setups and how it works for you.

Chase is pretty, I know and very bad a$$ to, but
$400 can buy custom made rad like that anywhere in the world and for another $600 probably custom condenser and intercooler to.

My point is to have radiator and a/c condenser in same size and intercooler in front with 90* couplers that don't interfere with flip lights at non boutique price.

This thread is to find out OEM and aftermarket mass produced parts that fit in place of stock s13 parts and leaving 2.5"-3" on both sides of radiator for intercooler pipes.

Now, 240sx rad is 26 1/4" wide so to be 100% comfortable we are looking for car that have 20" wide rad and a/c condenser.
Aftermarket rad for AE86 Corola is 23 1/8" wide, it might fit with 2.5" elbows but has inlet on wrong size, not sure about condenser, etc.

The radiator size really doesn't matter if you have good fans, it's just more surface area, you could get away cooling an sr20 with a fucking civic radiator if you wanted to. Plenty of 300-400hp cars with dinky ass radiators. You're going to pay boutique price for a quality and custom part such as you're asking.

As far as custom condensers they're no different than radiators. You can do like Luis here and myself and use a Porsche condenser






Just order some hardline and have it bent up at an a/c shop or spend $$$ on a/n hose it's not that hard. Get a small fan from jegs and wire up your oem a/c fan wiring to it and blah blah.

Honda Civic aftermarket radiator is definitely very affordable and plenty of used a/c system around to.
I saw couple of them with sr20det but without a/c system

but is it really enough or that fan have to run at full speed all the time
- does it overheat, is it safe at all?

I wouldnt wanna run a half rad on a turbo engine. SRs run notoriously hot, I'd like something that could keep the engine cool, specially when Im flogging it.

As stated before, tons of civics 300+400hp run half size radiators and Luke Pakula ran a half size on his sr20 ae86 that drifts all of the time.



He runs a v'mount setup now and is pushing 350-370hp. But like I said it's not going to kill you, but you're going to have to coin up for a GOOD half size radiator otherwise you will warp it from heat and it will blow.

So - you are saying that you and 99% zilvian with sr20det in their 240's are doing it wrong?

Again: this is not about projects with unlimited budget

Beside of that why you are using expensive Porshe a/c setup with full size radiator on your 240 and not tiny Civic rad and a/c and save money, space and weight.

Unfortunately SR's have the inlet on the left side and the outlet on the right, which really narrows down the radiator options. I had no problem finding one for my KA, but now that I am going SR it took me a while to find a radiator that features the inlet and outlet on the correct sides, is just small enough to fit under the core support and just large enough to cool well, and which does not have a filler, since I will need to use an in-line filler anyway.

These two are all I have been able to find so far:

I plan on purchasing the 2.5" thick one. It will still require reducer couplers/adapters though, since the inlet and outlet are larger than the stock SR hoses.

Obviously they will require custom mounting, but I am expecting that, since I will be moving it under the radiator core instead of using the stock location.
Other than that, my plan is also to run the intercooler and intake piping around the radiator for a 'tucked' mid-mount setup.

It seems you are not planning to hide it under the support, which means you can use a radiator with a filler, so I am sure you will have an easier time finding one.

HPI makes a shortened A/C condenser called "Radiator Rescue".





Sadly none for an S13.
I might have a Civic one custom fitted so my radiator gets more fresh air.
Because, when the outside temps get closer to 100 degrees, my engine gets really hot whenever I put on the A/C.

Yes Radiator Rescue is a good idea, would it be difficult or to expensive to cut 3"-4" of the top of stock condenser?

Never seen that done before, but I'd imagine that having to reweld the inlet or outlet back on would be a bit difficult.

I might just have custom lines made for a small Honda condenser or something.
