Silly Header Question

Hey all

This might be silly but its new to me....

Heres my current exhaust setup:
Stock manifold
Stock Cat
no resonator
half inch oversize plumbing
stock muffler

what I wanna know is when i install my header, would it be totally useless if I just upgraded the cat and kept everything else the same?

I am kinda interested in this myself! I want to have my header in before I have my high flow mounted, and my exhaust bent up....so I am only mildly interested b/c I won't keep the other stuff stock long....ANYWAY

Twitch-I think it will improve performance, but minimally....I know people who have done headers on a otherwise stock V8,with stock exhaust, and it made a nice difference, but I don't know about the 240

I've seen header dyno's with 10-12hp gains. good stuff depending on which ones. It will only help.

I think hotshot may delete the cat.. so check on that.

what's a precat? all you need is a bung in the exhaust to mount an o2 sensor.

I have all my exhaust parts replaced and here's how I did it.

OBD-II s14

Hotshot header unit - replaces ALL part from header down to "Fake" CAT.
Installed Random Tech High Flow CAT where the "fake" cat normally goes.
And Finally the Apexi N! dual which mounts directly behine the high flow cat. Good thing about the Random Tech cat is the flanges. It doesn't require gaskets because it's self sealing.
Oh I also rewired the 2nd O2 sensor which was originally located right after the stock cat. I moved it to the Exhaust just after the new cat. Also the 1st O2 sensor is mounted to the Hotshot header in almost the exact location as the stock header. All in all my exhaust consists of 4 pieces: Header-CAT-1st muffler section-2nd muffler section.

With yours you should replace everything EXCEPT the muffler sections like you stated. Also rewire the 2nd O2 sensor like I did that way you won't get an engine light. If your is OBD-I(1 O2 sensor) then it should be the 1st one that mounts to the header, and disregard the rewire info.

Hope this helps with your set up making sense.

Also just a side note, the header WILL make signifcant power gains on the top end. Very noticable gains with your butt dyno. The stock header unit on all 240s was very restrictive. I mean just put the two side by side when you do the install and look at the pipe bends, it speaks for itself.

Good Luck

Just for reference.. an aftermarket header with an aftermarket exhaust on a KA is L-O-U-D..

I had silencers in my N1 Dual for a while (very restrictive) and there was still a noticable power gain, so I'm pretty sure you'd be happy with the results. The noise shouldn't be too bad with a stock exhaust as well.

i just installed a new hotshot header and full exhaust (HKS)...its not loud at all untill you really step on it but the sound is amazing...not annoying at all...removing the resonator is generally what makes exhaust loud and shitty souding...go for the headers...i love it and im sure you will too...BTW hotshot does not replace the cat...i have a 93 s 13..

hotshot...are these similar to pacesetter you think? Id buy the pacesetter cat back system I saw on ebay to go with it if I Hadnt seen such poor quality from the kit on my dads car........Oh, my high (er) flow cat is from a 1999 Grand Prix GTP- the cat is big, flat and can be welded to my car. I can get it from the junkyard for $15

I jusy installed the latest generation header from Hotshot on my car yesterday. It fits PERFECT and it's a great quality piece (with bling also...lol). Only problem I had with it was the bung for the second O2 sensor had the thred pitch for the size of the first O2 sensor. The second O2 sensor is quite smaller than the first causing it not to fit. Luckilt I still had my old O2 sensor and I just used it as a plug. I'm throwing codes from the ECU, but the second O2 does nothing amyways so no worries.

And as others have said...with the addition of the header along with my Apexi N1 cat-back...it's LOUD....but me likes!!!

exhaust upgrades closer to the engine always make more of a difference than farther from it. so yes, a header is still good w/ stock muffler. it will be a bit louder but wont matter unless your muffler is just crap. id put back on the resonator (or any resonator the same size piping as what you have) as well as a hi-flow cat from catco. their only 50 bucks or less and flow a shitload better.

Actually I have a Hotshot header with a high flow cat and HKS hi-power exhaust and it's not too loud.It only get's loud at high rpm,or when accelerating hard.Normal cruisin' it's not bad.
